I’m 32. I love watching golf and I have gone out and played with friends before (years ago) but only a handful of times. I’ve never received any lessons and for all intents and purposes, I would basically be a beginner.

It would be nice to be able to golf for a hobby and to attend work golf outing events, but I’m too embarrassed because of how bad I am.

I am decently athletic/coordinated , played sports in high school (football and basketball), and stay in decent shape.

What should I do to learn how to play?

It’s absolutely possible. If you can afford it, start with lessons. This way you start with proper fundamentals and don’t have to spend a ton of time undoing bad habits.

Absolutely start playing. You'd be surprised at how many people play all the time and still suck. So don't be embarrassed about not being good. Everyone sucked at some point and some people still do.

In all seriousness, I picked it up in college and I would love to go back to that point and relive learning the game. It's addicting. You have a lot of room for improvement. You're breaking new personal bests. Learning golf, to me, is funnier than being good at golf.

I would ask you this-

Where do you live?
How much time do you have available?
How patient are you?
Do you have money to spare?

I knocked it around in hs but not enough to say I played golf.
Picked it up as a regular thing about age 33/34. So, yes you absolutely can pick it up as an adult.

I think it’s worth it, but I would advise this-give yourself a realistic budget for 1-2 years of playing/lessons/equipment.

Reassess midway through and then at the end of yr decide whether to dive in or keep it very casual vs hang it up. It’s not for everyone and can eat a lot of time and money if you don’t fall in love with it.

How to start would be to contact a recommended teaching pro in your area and get their advice on what equipment to start with.

I would absolutely start w used clubs.
I would get three lessons to start. One on full swing, one on chipping/pitching and one on putting so you start out practicing the most efficient way possible.

Then after many years of angst you too can tell people you are mediocre like the rest of us!

Absolutely, I started playing at 32 as a 25-30 handicap and now I'm 46 and I am a 5 handicap. Lessons and PRACTICE. Everyone says get a lesson, but nobody emphasizes to practice what is taught in the lesson.

My great grandmother took up the game at 65 and became a scratch golfer before becoming to old to play and also had 2 aces under her belt as well... So absolutely you can

Buy a used pitching wedge on eBay and go to the driving range.

It's totally possible, and lots of fun.

1. Find a local range or cheap course you can spend a lot of time at.

2. Get a buddy or two that is also trying to learn.

3. Catch the fever.

I took my fist swing at 34.

My Boss at the time said I could learn to play and take customers out or work every Friday. I choose golfing.

Never too late to get hooked on the game.

Get a pro to work with you.
There are different styles of teaching.

Find someone who can relate your athletic experience to golf.
I like Manual DeLa Torres style of “what” instead of “how.”
Others like hypertechnical physics and such.
Find a style of learning and teaching that suits you.

Good balance is one fundamental.
A good setup, grip, aim , stance happen before you even swing the club.
You can shake hands with someone, you can learn golf.

With average coordination, you should be able to learn to putt and a basic swing fairly quickly.

Warning, it is addictive, and you will chase after improvement no matter how good you get.

It’s fun.

I bet you break 90 fairly quickly if you put the work in.

Thanks to all in here who commented. You’ve convinced me to give it a go. I’m looking for local pros who give lessons. I’ll report back in a few months for updates

I started playing at 35 because of work. Similar story to yours, played baseball in high school. Quickly got hooked.

I played and went to driving range for about a year before I thought I wouldn’t embarrass myself with my first lessons.

Took 4 lessons and it helped tremendously. Was shooting around 110, now I’m mid 80s which is fine for me.

My first goal was to not embarrass myself or the company I work for at industry events. Now my goal is to shoot a 79. Lol

The good news is that most of your friends and coworkers that talk up their golf game actually suck so you really won’t be as far behind as you think.

Don’t start at the tips.

Move back when you break 80.

Have fun.

One thing that I see a lot of people back out on golf over is you have to suck for a good bit before you get decent or good. Then when you think you have it figured out, you change one minor thing and your swing goes to shite. It's an easy sport to lose your patience with. Don't go into it thinking you're going to be a natural, and it isn't really a sport you can put down, and pick right back up where you left off. Be patient, and don't expect to be good in short time.

^^This, and include practice time at the range as well. I started at 32 myself and did not listen to this advice. Now 5 years later I still have some bad habits that I have not completely gotten rid of yet.

Few tips in addition to lessons & practice:
--Buy cheaper used clubs (rockbottomgolf dot com, callawaypreowned, or 2ndswing)
--Play from the white tees, regardless even if your group is playing from blues or tips
--If playing a regular round and a group is on the tee time right behind you please know how to keep pace going by picking up your ball and calling TOD on that hole at either triple bogey or double par
--Bring lots of balls
--Don't be afraid to play a round without a scorecard
--If a club is giving you problems then take it out of the bag until you can get to the range to practice. You're just learning so you are going to suck, don't suck more by being hard headed
--Have patience my friend, lots and lots of patience
