I have accumulated a variety of mostly cheap and mismatched tools over the years. Admittedly I am not much of a handyman however I am finding myself having to work on stuff more as I get older. I am tired of my crap tools not cutting it or having to borrow what I need.

So first thing I want to get is a good set of standard, metric sockets, deep sockets, and ratchet. Half inch. I would prefer them in one set with a case.

Buy in person from big box stores or order online? Amazon brands?

Any recommendations from the OB are appreciated.

I have a set of tekton deep sockets and some of their ratchets, some of their stuff is still made in the USA and mostly Taiwan if not. I have been pleased with everything so far, good quality and finish

As mentioned above, Tekton is probably your best bang for the buck. They also have excellent customer service. Their quality is also very good for what you pay.

Most of the hard-line stuff is Taiwan sourced, but made in one of the top Taiwanese Tool manufacturing plants. The rest of the lineup has some good USA sourced items, such as their Crowsfeet sets and screwdrivers. A lot of their pliers are also USA made (by Wilde Tools) but not all of their pliers are.

I would stay away from Amazon branded stuff, most of it is cheap Chinese stuff.

If you are an average Joe like the majority of us and aren't wrenching for a living, I'd recommend buying one of those box sets from HD or Lowes. The size is dependent on your wants/desires, but they have several options. Wait until they have a good sale.

Project Farm on YouTube really likes GearWrench ratchets.

I got the Milwaukee packout socket set and love it. Helps that I have a ton of other packout boxes it integrates with though.

For the money I really like the dewalt sets. I only have small sets of Dewalt but they are nice for an import.

My big sets are mostly Made in the USA craftsman but the new Dewalt ratchets are smoother.

I kind of want a 6 point set with large modern lazer etching but my US craftsman will probably last my lifetime.

Most of my mechanic tools are Snap-On. Twenty years ago I knew a kid that was taking auto mechanics class at a local community college, and Snap-On had a special discounted set for students ($1000 for a pretty complete set). I got the kid to buy a set for me. I would never pay normal price for them, but that was a heck of a deal.

I personally like Husky, Kobalt and GearWrench.

First off I'll admit to being a bona fide tool snob. My home set is almost 100% Snap-On. Even the boxes are Snap-On. Having said that, I am not going to sit here and tell you to go get Snap-On tools or you're a dumbass. The big box stores have good tools, and if I needed a certain tool in a hurry I would buy from them in a heartbeat. But, your post indicates you may not want to spend that much money, initially. So, go to Harbor Freight. They have a high end tool line, Icon, and it has been tested by Project Farm, and others. They are pretty good tools, and they have a pretty good price too! They aren't cheap. Based on your OP I would go to Harbor Freight and look at the Pittsburgh line of tools and start there. I have friends, and some family that use that line with no issues around the house. That includes working on their own cars, trucks, and mowers. Compare them to the big box offerings and make your decision from there. Also, Harbor Freight has some very good tool boxes for the homeowner, and even the starting professional mechanic. Don't take just my word on all this, YouTube the different lines, there's hundreds of videos, then decide.

Half inch

Go with a lifetime warranty; Craftsman, Snap-On, the Lowes brand, etc. For the most part, they're all the same.

I really like older (made in USA) Craftsman and SK Tools. Both have lifetime warranty although the new replacements may not be of the same quality.

There's a nice big channelok brand from Sam's that used to be like $60.

Not sure what it is now. Good starter set for sure.
