Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, and Florida Gas Transmissions provided an update to the project’s legislative task force Tuesday.

The project, which has faced repeated delays, is designed to prevent floods like the one that impacted 200,000 homes in Zachary, Baker and Central in 2016.

Army Corps Col. Cullen Jones says the canal will divert 30,000 cubic square feet of water from the Comite River to the Mississippi River once complete, while also drawing water from three bayous. The potential flow through the canal is equal to creating the Arkansas River, Jones says.

The Army Corps is handling 19 of the project’s 22 construction contracts, 13 of which have been awarded with six completed and seven ongoing, Jones says.

Paul Sawyer, chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Garret Graves, R-Louisiana, notes that would put the best case timeline for completion in the third quarter of 2025.




The capitol area voters in multiple parishes started to tax themselves about 23 years ago for this.....back when estimated costs were only $123 million.

Every time I drive by this huge ditch on LA-964 south of Zachary, I wonder how in the heck they are going to get all that water underneath the highway and over to the Mississippi. There's not much digging to the West of 964 but to the east it's massive.

The bigger parts of the channel look to be larger and deeper than the river it's supposed to drain. Hard to imagine it not making a big impact on flooding if its ever finished.

I also heard it was sold as some recreational river too. Always wondered if that was true. I am hearing now it is just going to be a ditch now. Nothing but cane pole fishing.

There aren’t 200,000 homes in all of Central, Zachary and Baker.

They haven’t begun all of the projects yet; nor have they relocated all the utilities or purchased all of the ROW. It won’t be ready in 2025.

That shows the discrepancy of flow rate where the rivers meet at US 190. A project to lower the Amite would also lower the Comite from reducing backflooding. Lowering the Amite first should have been the priority.

Isn't this largely due to Florida Gas taking it's time to move their damn pipeline? I believe they just got terms signed a few weeks ago and now they have to implement the plan to move it.

State should tell them you have 3 months to move it or it's going the way of Nord Stream.
