Lol, I didn’t want to be the first one to point that out. Maybe he is right about better pay attracting smarter candidates!

How about this you politican motherfrickers, your pay is completely incentive based as a % of the State GDP to expense ratio.

You vote on bills to increase our value, you get paid more, you decrease it you get paid less.

Ironic the very same group digging their toes in to give teachers a raise citing they only work 180 days a year wants a raise while working 60 days a year.

I honestly didn’t know they only made 16k

He didn’t say that’s their only compensation.

So I’m curious. Does anyone know the additional compensation they receive other than from their own fundraising for reelection?

Everyone wants there to be less lawyers/public sector/professional activist types in the legislature. Well, pulling normal professionals away from their salaries is going to require paying them enough to justify leaving their jobs for two/three months a year.

Why would we want to pay more if it only results in them making more rules that frick up the state even more?

Let’s get some retirees in there with life experiences that help them understand unintended consequences.

Normal Joes could never be a state legislator and hold a real job.

Then maybe we need a different law, one where employee must be given unpaid leave for legislative sessions and the state reimburses the lost wages and pays any healthcare premiums. Legislators are allotted paid staff to handle constituent issues during the off season.

it's not supposed to be about the money.

It does severely limit who can hold the position. You have to be independently wealthy, retired, or a business owner who can afford the time away from work. That excludes a large part of the population.

It would be a bargain if they just take the money and not work

Yes, because old people in political leadership positions have done such a bang up job, right?

They all file financial disclosures with the ethics board. But it’s too easy to say “guvment bad and politicians are corrupt” rather than reading through paperwork.

And I’m completely shocked with the amount of people on here who are okay with raising taxes to pay legislators when this board is usually so vehemently opposed to raising taxes for better roads or teacher pay or things like that.

hey also get $160 per diem. It's a part-time job. They're not supposed to get much pay.

Right. Just saying they are making 16K is not the entire picture.

And it is a part time job.

At the same time, it's a part time job so either you need to be able to fit this in with a full time job with a TON of flexibility, or you need to be retired / have other cash sources so that you can survive with this being a part time job.

That's the biggest reason why the vast majority of our legislators are self-employed attorneys or community activists. The vast majority of people can't afford to be away from their "real job" for that long.

Rather than paying them more, I'd like to see us use technology so they can be away from their real jobs less often.

If you tell them that the pay is $16,800 and you’re going to be tied up in Baton Rouge anywhere from three to six months, and that’s when you’re in session

It's usually three months if no special session, so that's still $5600 a month. Plus all the perks like per diem, the free apartments at the pentagon barracks, etc. Then you have fundraisers with free food multiple times a week. I'm not buying this BS.

They don't apply this logic to the minimum wage.

They're getting compensated more than fairly. The entire comparison to what other states pay legislators only serves to demonstrate that other states mismanage taxpayer funds more than Louisiana

It's a 60 day annual session in an 85 day period beginning in March, if I'm correct. Understanding they're supposed to read, advocate, represent, educate and learn in between sessions. That's discretionary, the malfeasance seems to be also but when you decline Teachers, vets, front line, health cate as priority and give yourselves a $1,000/ day +/- / annual session, excluding special sessions, often self imposed indirectly. Idk

Edit to say: as elected public Servants
..Service...not professional politicians
