We lost to a 13 win Auburn team in the SEC tourney. Something else excuse makers never talk about is that LSU was ranked #2 in the country to start that season. The season was a massive failure by our coach.

It was definitely a disappointing season. We should have won the SEC, instead of losing to a decent but by no means great UGA team, TWICE. Including at home when we missed the front end of 1 and 1 free throw something stupid
Like 11 times in the 2nd half.

The team still should have made the final four or at least the elite eight. No one was going to beat UNLV ( and don’t give me we beat them in the regular season, I was there, they had a couple of guys suspended and it was at home) Ga Tech was also loaded we got stuck playing them in the 2nd round because of the disappointing regular season.

If we beat Georgia Tech that year we for sure go to the final four.

That team got Dale Brown’d.

They lost by 3 points to Georgia Tech which would have put them in New Orleans for a chance to go to the final four. Georgia Tech had Kenny Anderson who had a good pro career and also Dennis Scott who had a very good pro career. Sure, LSU had Shaq and Chris Jackson with Stanley Roberts, but LSU didn't have a stud backup point guard. Great guard play wins in the NCAA tourney. BTW: Georgia Tech went on to lose to UNLV in the final four and then UNLV won the next game to win the natty. Georgia Tech was a way better free throw shooting team than LSU also. People give Dale a hard time and we all know he wasn't a great X's and O's guy but I don't think he was the main reason that LSU couldn't get it done. They ran into a buzzsaw in Georgia Tech.

Dale Brown and tex winter was no longer on staff

prplhze, you do realize LSU had been running Tex's offense for years before he came and coached as an assistant?

And would run it long years after, the game changer is Chris, we had to change the offense to fit his style of play and do not forget all those time outs Dale had to call to tell Chris to shoot more.

Daddy Dale was too busy trying to find BigFoot and the Ark of the Convenant vs. actually doing his job and learning Xs and Os.

This is totally true and overlooked.

Lethal weapon 3 was the real deal, however even with Chris healthy GT still had that shooters chance. We just had a really crappy draw and ran into a hot 3 point shooting team, it happens.

Dale Brown
this is the right answer. He had no clue how to coach a team full of talent and use their full potential. When his teams were the favorite he struggled

otowntiger, I am guessing then that Dean Smith is the worse coach in NCAA history.

As North Carolina was loaded and favorited to win years on end only to lose more times than they were favorited to win it all?

And remember LSU was never favored to win it all.

You didn't see innovative coaching out of LSU during Dale Brown's tenure after Tex left.

Madking That is the 4th team Harold was rated right at 25th best in 1988 and that is from memory, Carol was a top 12 type player who had the issue out of high school that hit most Louisiana players at the time, so was dropped in rankings.

Bob Gibbons had him as high as 8th best at one time and his brother as high as 14th. But dropped both down late in the season when the issues started to show up in the papers.

I worked for Bob on the side back in those days.

Harold was at LSU the year Carol had his big season. When they were together Harold was an AA, Carol wasn’t.

Consistently inconsistent. We'd play or beat LMU UNLV! then lose on the road to friggin Vanderbilt.

Caught fire at the right time. Also beat 1 seed Mich State, and only lost to Champion Unlv.

Because will Wade wasn’t coaching yet

No doubt about it. Wade’s tournament record speaks for itself. He would have had this star-packed LSU team in the Final Four just like all of his other teams.

Damn! I miss Will Wade. That guy was the best. THE BEST!!
