First time this has happened to us. Landed in London, no bags in sight. Filled out the missing bag paperwork and went and bought a change of clothes and toiletries. Well tomorrow we were supposed to eat at a fine dining restaurant and we have zero clothes for it. Will I get reimbursed if I go buy some cheap dress shoes and a button down? This has been a nightmare

Yes. Keep receipts. You can be reimbursed cash equivalent or more bang for your buck on flight credit if you wanna opt for that. That’s been my experience at least. Happened to us in Seattle.

And if it’s legit lost for good make sure you tell them about the 4 Rolex watches you had in there .

United surprisingly bought me a $600 suit after landing in Brussels, while my bag sat in Chicago for three days after I landed.

Buy what you need, submit the receipts, and get paid. I don't know what has changed since Brexit, though. I didn't bother expensing toiletries, since I was going to eventually buy deodorant and toothpaste anyway, but the suit was something I needed

Happened twice to someone in my group on separate trips.

Keep all receipts for everything that you need to replace. I would also make sure to print out your reservations as proof for needing a nice shirt/shoes/pants.

My wife has changed her packing routine because of lost luggage.

Yep. Unless I’m going skiing or checking wine, no checked bags. Ever.

Where are you flying? FFS, I've had two bags arrive late (the one to BRU I mentioned) in over a million miles of flying, including to Middle Eastern destinations. What are you doing to do in Europe for ten days with a carryon?

If you're only flying domestic, which I suspect, just put a gun in it (the TSA approved way.) They'll never lose it.

Europe, SA, Caribbean, and of course NA.

Executive Plat with almost 2M miles.

Find a laundry service, buy some new clothes, etc. I hate, hate, hate checking bags. Guess how many bags I’ve lost in the overhead?

Seriously, it’s easy to do with a little thought and planning.

Good luck. Spent my first 2 days in Italy with no luggage. Lesson learned - I always bring a small carry-on now with toiletries and a change of clothes.

Caveat: I would normally travel for about two weeks at a time.

I don't disagree with the laundry service, but if you need to pack two suits in a 21" carryon, with socks, toiletries, etc., the creases in the jackets are going to be disastrous, and unfixable without leaving them in the shower steaming for more than 45m.

I'm one of the poor arseholes that was jammed in coach to *every* single continent besides Antarctica. I am a hardcore one checked bag, one carryon dude, to be able to maneuver.

The only time besides the trip to BRU which I already mentioned where my luggage was "misplaced" (and paid for, even though it was late, but not lost) in the last 20 years was to Abu Dhabi via LHR and IST (it was not a Star Alliance flight).

With a lot of NA travel, you're probably stuck routing or going to really sweet airports like LAX, ORD, LGA/JFK, and DFW based on the alliance you're in. I do try very hard to route through other hubs like FRA, IST, or TYO to avoid non-interlined baggage issues.

Yes. AA left my bags in Dallas but I made it to Vail (EGE). Went shopping for winter ski clothes since I had none and everything got reimbursed. Took a bit of time but got some nice Patagonia shite out of it

Ha I hear you, brother!

I live in Fort Worth, so spoiled with DFW as home base from an ease perspective. Cursed from the AA perspective, but that’s another thread

Also thankful that I only have to wear a suit these days for weddings or funerals. Packing a blazer for dinners, etc is easy and I’ve gotten pretty good at folding so creases/wrinkles are easy to manage (as I type this, I’m realizing that I’ve morphed into my grandfather haha).

This is the correct answer.

Check a bag with all non essentials and essentials in your carry on / personal item. Also, if traveling with more than one person, and you're both checking a bag don't pack one person in each bag. Each person gets 1/2 of each bag so if one bag gets lost one person didnt lose everything.

Luggage doesnt get lost enough to necessitate never checking just be smart about what you do check.

Just trying to understand how this happens. Specifically, the new wife and I handing nearly identical bags to a guy in Charlotte, and mine appears in Baton Rouge, but hers doesn't. I fell for the request in TCI to let them check our carry ons. Never again.

I'm with Panny. Unless we have to pack for differing weather (as we will for Norway in August and the Dolomites in September) we always work to pack just a carry-on. For these two trips we will pack a carry-on each and one medium checked bag if necessary as we'll need summer clothing and possibly brisk weather clothing which is a certainty in Norway.

AA did the same thing to me going from Miami to Vail. They told us that we could spend $900 (?) or something like that per day per ticketed passenger on clothes. We were reluctant to spend the full amount but we needed a certain amount of stuff. We bought more than we needed and they paid us in full sans sales taxes. Our bags were in Miami when we got back. The snow was too bad for them to make it there for several days.

Yes. If it’s well documented and you truly needed the items within reason you will get compensation. I had to file delayed luggage, trip delay, and trip interruption. Got them all reimbursed. Just follow instructions on claim to the T. If they ignore you call them. That was for our Italian debacle from last summer. I also purchased trip insurance for an exuma trip that EVERYONE in my group got covid 2-3 days before. We were all at a family wedding last may. Within 24-48 hours of the claim Generali had refunded our rental property to the tune of 12k. Delta refunded our flights too. Most recently a diversion resulted in an overnight in NYC and delta paid out really quickly. Just keep receipts and follow all of the instructions.
