Hot take -- the best performance in Hook is Bob Hoskins as Smee.

Accurate take. If any of y'all have never seen the Neverland mini-series syfy did a few years back, Hoskins reprises his role of Smee. It was cool to see. That was a pretty decent re-imagining of the Peter Pan story, even for SyFy.

I tried but never ended up really liking it. Something about the sets being so over the top and everything, just didn’t draw me in.

Spielberg hates it himself

Pretty sure one of the kids ended up being in band of brothers as one of the sergeants.

To me that’s why it’s so good. It’s a little boys fever dream basically.

Meg Ryan would have been a really good Tinker Bell

Just showed this to my 6 and 4 year old boys recently. They lived it, and I’m pumped we’re crossing into a phase where they are starting to branch out to more non-animated movies

definitely super cheesy

Yes but iirc it was more emotional and deep as well. Funny how the Peter Pan actor went on to be the a-hole QB competition on the Friday Night Lights series.

ETA: sorry was thinking of Peter Pan (2003).
I liked Hook as well.

Correct. He was also in What About Bob.

The story goes is Cameron wanted him for T2, and he toured the set and all, but Disney would not let him out of his contract.

the only part I didn't like is they swapped a role typically played by a petite woman to Robin Williams who doesn't fit that description at all.

Because he's grown up in Hook and not a little boy like in the other stories.

I think Dustin Hoffman is awesome as Hook and they did a great job at creating the lost boys and making everything seem like a young boys imagination run wild in bringing Neverland to life.

Was pretty cool that he was also in Finding Neverland.

I don’t recall how they explained that. Peter was Wendy’s age and possibly her love interest then, then later he is grown up but married to Wendy’s granddaughter?

It's been forever since I watched it but didn't Wendy leave Neverland while Peter stayed there for years, never aging?

Then he finally left and grew up?

You age when you leave Neverland. They had a whole montage about how he kept coming back to visit her and she kept getting older and older. Then, one time he came back and she was really old, but her granddaughter was about his age and asleep, and he fell in love with her right then, and decided to never return to Neverland.

Then you didn’t get the premise of the movie

Defeats the purpose of the original story though... the exact opposite actual. Peter Pan is a tale about a boy who hates his father (figure) so much that he refuses to grow up because he doesn't want to end up like him. Because of this, the only woman he can get is a fantasy (Tinker Bell). In the end, he kills his father (figure) for the love of a woman and learns to be a man. Hook sends the now grown, mature boy back to adolescence.
