Heading to SD for a conference then LA for a few days after. I could find many rec’s on the board for things to do.

Any sites, brews, dining, and other various input welcome.

Will have a rental car.

On my list so far:
Firestone brewing in Venice Beach
Manhattan Beach visit

TIA y’all!

Extend your stay in SD. If I didn’t have family in LA I would definitely never go back.

I want to see the Manhattan beach area, don’t think I want to get into LA. So any recs outside the area or around Venice or MB?

Took the family a few years ago and thought we wanted to go to Venice beach but when we got there to park, there was nothing but shady and homeless people there. We ended up going to Santa Monica pier and having lunch and went down to the beach there for a bit. Was a whole lot safer feel than Venice. We also went on one of those city tours in a van which was pretty cool to see all the tourist sites. Went on a whale watching cruise which was probably the highlight of the trip to LA. Having said all that, I’m glad we went for the experience but don’t ever planning on going back

The Taco Stand in La Jolla has the best burritos and tacos I’ve ever had and it’s not even close. And every person I know who has had them says the same.

Go to LA a lot for work. I don’t mind it

We always hike the Hollywood sign at Griffin Park. Great hike

You don’t mind the drive, the northern coast to Melrose and Santa Barbara is beautiful

I love Hermosa, Manhattan, Newport and Huntington Beach. Great spots

Callie is fantastic. Been a couple times for work dinners. Always try grabbing a reservation at Young Blood afterward - great cocktail experience.

brews,

If you're driving SD -> LA and looking for breweries, make a stop in Anaheim and do a quick triangle of Monkish, Green Cheek and Bottle Logic. Monkish's Anaheim location is really cool.

If, for whatever reason, you took I-15, can also make a stop at Electric in Murrieta. Seems like a longshot, but probably my favorite brewery for hazy IPA these days.

Go hike Torrey Pines. Easy hike and absolutely amazing views.

If you’re driving up to LA, Laguna Beach is a fun stop on the way.

Agree with this, the hikes in LA are iconic. You have to do them. The area by Santa Barbara is beautiful. Romero Canyon behind Montecito is a great hike. Big mtns falling into the ocean. Oprah's house is back there. Beautiful part of the world.

You’ve got more than enough great ideas so I’ll throw out a few unmentioned oddball ones.

SD
Spruce Street Bridge
Mount Soledad

LA
A comedy venue - Icehouse, Westside, Improv…any one of them. Don’t worry who’s scheduled; just go
Westwood Village Cemetery to visit Marilyn and others.

Top of the world hike in Laguna is one of my favorites in the area. And the eat all of those calories you just burned off at Crystal Cove Shake Shack down.

Closer in to LA, take a hike over at Shipwreck Cove/Bluff Cove Trail on Palos Verdes. Never real crowded and you can watch some dudes surf in the cove

One thing I did the last time I visited San Diego was to take a day trip to Tijuana but don’t do that.
