I need a guitar

My 6 year old son is learning to play guitar. He has been playing drums for a couple years and is now working on both. I got a used Baby Taylor for him. I would like something decent to try to learn along with him as well. Not junk, not breaking the bank, but something kinda middle of the road. Acoustic electric would be the preference. What are some models that I should look at, new or used?

This is a pretty broad term. What is your realistic budget?

This is really out of my comfort zone, so hard to really know where the price point meets quality. Ideally would spend maybe $400-$500. But if there is a nice deal for $250 then great, but also if it means go ahead and spend a little more for a big jump in quality I would be open.

Can’t go wrong with a Yamaha.
Plenty to choose from.

Yamaha or Eastman at that price point.
For Eastmans, their AC models will have electronics while the traditional models usually won't.
You can get into an all solid Eastman for about $600 new, used will obviously be less.
I learned on a Yamaha FG830, solid top and laminate back and sides. Around $300 or so new, it didn't have electronics though.
Epiphone's Inspired by Gibson line is also pretty good, it will be a little higher though.

Get the kid an electric. Too many damn acoustic guitar players out there. We need more young kids learning to shred!

I think starting a kid on a small scale electric could be fun, but acoustic would develop his callouses faster

Six years old? Unless he's a really giant six-year old, my vote is to electrify the Baby Taylor if he has an E/A desire.
Get an LR Baggs Anthem SL. Not only does it sound superb, it can be removed without any trade evidence and installed in the youth's first full size guitar ... when he's a little older and a better match physically to a full-size guitar.
One of my jobs working through college decades ago was teaching guitar and out of dozens of youth students, I never had one kid under the age of 10-12 that actually played a full-sized guitar with any degree of musical proficiency. Their full-sized guitars played them for the most part.

A used BIG Baby Taylor. Baby Taylor is 3/4 size.
BBT is 7/8 or something like that.
A BBT from the 2000’s is a nice guitar.

Gretsch Gin Rickey
Or you can get the Jim Dandy that doesn’t have a pickup for $189. Love mine! It never leaves the sofa

My son has a Baby Taylor. I am asking for guitar recommendations for me, not him.

I know I'm in the minority, but for an A/E I love Ovations. Their Celebrity line is Asian (Korea or China), but I had an example that was outstanding (and is now my son's).

Sorry I mistead, then I also vote Yamaha or Eastman.

Teach him to weld instead
Learning to play guitar is only gonna make his life harder

Acoustic vs electric is almost an entirely different skill set to me. The acoustic skills are harder and more muscular and electric is learning a lighter touch. I flatpick almost exclusively and when I get on an electric, I have trouble getting subtle clean tone because I’m so used to acoustic. I’m a pretty darn good picker but I sound ham-handed on electric.

Came to this board to start a thread about selling one of my acoustics and saw your thread. Got a little excited then saw your budget...
I second the Yamaha recommendation mentioned earlier. My practice guitar is a Takamine EG360SC that has been really good to me. I don't think you could go wrong there either. Good luck.
