We plan to fly from Dallas to Asheville in early May to visit friends, then drive to northern Virginia for a graduation and finally fly back to Dallas from Richmond VA.

I've looked at several car rental sites, but can't pin down the amount of the One Way Fee.

Anybody have experience with this fee between medium sized airports like Asheville and Richmond.

So they will charge you by the mile if you don’t return to the same place. Atleast that’s how hertz does it. Maybe .45 a mile?

Shouldn't they give you a rate when you put in the pickup and return info.

Years ago we picked up in Sacramento and dropped off in Phoenix. We took the car to S Fran, Vegas and Grand Canyon...Flew back from Phoenix.

We had a 4 State dropoff zone.

I just through your details into expedia and did not see one...something called recovery fee for $51.

I do one way rentals all the time and have never had an extra fee for it although I’m sure it costs more in the rental rate (as it should)

I use Avis

There’s no fee, it just may cost more. I always run multiple searches. Book a reservation that can be canceled and then keep checking.

I've done many one way car rentals over the years, mostly in smaller airports, including Richmond, VA a few times.

It's been pretty rare that there's actually an itemized one way charge on the bill. The overall rental probably does cost a little more though if the smaller airport has lower inventory. I always use National or Hertz & have never been charged by the mile as someone else mentioned.

They will charge you a hefty fee, basically the normal daily rate of the car + .54 cents a mile past a certain distance (National I believe is after 100 miles).

Fee doesn't have anything to do with the location you rent from.

Probably depends on the agency and location, somewhat. Since Covid, I can't say, but before we've done one-way rentals several times in the US, Canada & Europe. We never had to pay mileage, but sometimes there was a surcharge added, but that was more dependent on demand or supply in the starting and ending location. Last time we did a one-way we flew into Fresno and dropped the car off in SF, without any extra charges. I think we used Avis?

I booked a return to Memphis airport where I started but took the car to Knoxville instead on same day. Charged 75.00 for that with National.

It depends on the location. Sometimes they almost pay you to take it another location due to shifting demand between locations. I remember during COVID you could rent a car in California for dirt cheap if you were headed east.

Avis definitely seems to be the best with one way rentals. I use them quite a bit because of this.

I do one was rentals all the time with unlimited mileage.

OP, just plug in your pickup location online and there is always an options to "Return to a different location". Your rate may be more but there is no reason you cannot get unlimited mileage. It all just depends if you're depeleting a stock from one popular locations then wanting to drop it off at a less popular location. That means it will either sit somewhere not being rented OR they have to move it to another location themselves so they charge you for it but it usually isn't anything ridiculous.

I've done this dozens of times.

most recently did this in October, rented through Enterprise where we picked up in Hartford, CT and returned in Portland, ME. no extra fee and the total cost was even lower than returning it back to Hartford for some reason.

I did this recently. Flew into San Diego, rented car and drove to LA, flew home out of LA. Don't quote me but I THINK the one-way fee was around $65.
