Virginia Donors Demand $3.6 Billion From University for Removing Ancestor’s Name

Love this, can't wait to see how it plays out!

The University of Richmond has removed the name of donor T.C. Williams from its law school, citing student complaints that he allegedly owned slaves more than 175 years ago.
The Williams family now wants the Virginia university to give back donations they’ve made throughout the years, with interest, in the amount of $3.6 billion.
Robert Smith, who graduated from the law school that formerly bore his great-great-grandfather’s name, told The Epoch Times that if the family name is no longer good enough for the university, neither are family’s financial contributions.
“It might be worthwhile for you to require every woke activist to take a course in finance to appreciate those for whom [sic] they want to cancel,” Smith wrote in his January letter to Hallock.

They’ll most likely lose. But I like highlighting hypocrisy.

A lawsuit has not yet been filed. Why do you think they'd lose? It may well depend on any original documents that define the conditions for the family's financial support.

Doubt they'll get it back unless there was some sort of clause that the name has to stay to get the donations but still great to hear them stand up to this shite.

Yea they’ll lose because a lot of colleges and other organizations will cease to exist if they have to give back after canceling someone.
But highlighting the stupidity of cancelling is always fun and it causes them some headaches, so good.
The more interesting aspect will be how this affects gifting going forward. Specifically, if gift givers begin drawing instruments stipulating that schools, organizations, etc have to return gifts should they cancel. Does the organization refuse the gift? Do they accept and think any future enforcement attempt will be invalidated by courts?

I’m guessing no one will be happy if we call this Indian giving.

not sure what legal standing they'd have to demand a donation be returned, but I love that this is happening.

George Washington owned over 200 slaves.
How long does his name have now? 20 years?
Remember, if I told you 20 years ago that men dressed as women could use women’s bathrooms and locker rooms in 20 years you would have laughed.

Donors have very limited rights when it comes to charitable donations.

The school will lose future donations at the very least.

They have none, hence why this is just a letter sent to the school and not an actual lawsuit.

Counterpoint, it might be worthwhile for Mr. Smith to spend five minutes thinking through whether it’s a good idea to give a private right of action or other restitution to descendants for events that involved their ascendents 150 years ago.
quote:
Smith used coarse language in his letter, calling Hallock "a carpet bagging weasel,"
quote:
He added that Williams and all three of his brothers 'did their duty to protect their wives, children, homes and public institutions from a voracious and plundering invader' while serving in the Confederacy in the Civil War.
Just spit balling, but I’m guessing this guy doesn’t think highly of US Grant’s tactical acumen.
