Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU's) On Home Property

Have any of you OT ballas ever constructed an ADU on your property? Or turned unused space like an attic above the garage into a separate dwelling unit? Any advice you could give would be appreciated. I'm trying to plan ahead in the next 5-10 years we'll probably have my MIL living with us or I can foresee Tomato Jr. needing a co-habitat space in 5 years as he's not exactly the independent type rushing out to get an apt for college. Any dos and don'ts or successful install stories on a reasonable budget appreciated. Tia-

They are very common here. There are a few prefab options that are not bad. The shipping container ones are actually pretty cool but I would match the elevation to your home.

I've been eyeing a Studio Shed prefab for some mountain property that I bought. I'm scheduling a factory visit next week to check the quality of the finished product. Last thing I want it rental property that looks and feels like an RV interior.
Probably going to end up building a small lean-to home myself on the land.

I can't help with construction stuff and this may not be a problem, but make sure it's not bigger than your house or close to the size of your house. I know that sounds crazy, but if you ever sell it will cause you a headache to have an ADU similar in size and condition of our home. Also, if you think you might ever sell, make sure it has a bathroom, kitchen and a separate bedroom or else it's just a big rec room.

My 20 acre property has a barn, a min house and a garage which doubled as living space while the previous owner built the main dwelling. They finished a kitchen and a bathroom (toilet, sink and shower only, no tub). The garage itself was in a L shape around the kitchen/bathroom.
About 4 years after my wife (no pics) and I moved in, we had our only child. My MIL decided to retire and move closer to us to "help with the baby." We walled off the garage at the L junction and she upgraded the flooring, electrical, ran county water (we were on a well) and created a living room and a bedroom. Total cost for all the upgrades was about $40K if I remember correctly. That was in 2011.
ETA: The garage/MIL suite is a separate building from the main home. It's about 100' behind our back door.

Just finished an apartment over a detached garage about a month ago.
If you need to run extra power make sure you go ahead and dig a trench for wifi and gas and septic along with the power at the same time. Septic, install a grinder and force main, easiest way to go.
Don't worry about a big full-size oven and power for it. Those places are so small you can probably get away with a toaster oven since its usually just one person living there.
Plan on heavy textured sheetrock finish. Typically those attic bonus room trusses are not consistently straight to allow for a flat finish.

Not really. I just hired a contractor and built out part of the garage and connected a remolded part of the house to make a bedroom/living room combo, bathroom and baby kitchen.

Just keep on top of the contractor and track costs. Be in a position to show your wife where overspending and scope creep occurred. I would suggest that the contractor submit weekly invoices so if scope creep starts happening you can nip it in the bud quickly.
