The Ringer post deadline Championship Power Rankings - Pels at #14

This is KOC's Power Rankings not based on current standings, but purely on who he thinks can win a title now.
The Pels are in the "Finals Fantasies" group, at 14.
They are behind the Kings and Heat in that group.
He has moved the Lakers into the "True Finals Contenders" bracket all the way to #6, fyi.

With Zion Williamson on the mend, the Pelicans are holding on to their championship odds by a thread. Without him, they have no chance. But I still have belief in this team, with all of their depth and talent, just like I did early in the year. It’d just be nice to see Zion and Brandon Ingram share the floor for once.

Probably can just ignore the whole article then based on that it was written by a moron =)

KOC is very, very far from a moron.
But he, like everyone else in the media, has really bought in to the moves the Lakers made.
The Lakers did REALLY well at the deadline. Really, really well.
I certainly don't see them as #6 and a true Finals Contender though.
But he, like everyone else in the media, has really bought in to the moves the Lakers made.
quote:
6. Los Angeles Lakers
Weeks after acquiring Rui Hachimura from the Wizards, the Lakers have finally undone the Russell Westbrook disaster. For the price of a top-four protected 2027 first-round pick and one future second-round pick, the Lakers upgraded from Westbrook to D’Angelo Russell, Patrick Beverley to Malik Beasley, Damian Jones to Jarred Vanderbilt, and Thomas Bryant to Mo Bamba. Los Angeles now has better shooting, shot creation, and defense across multiple positions. The Lakers will be able to play with two bigs since Bamba can space the floor, or they can go small with Vanderbilt. They can throw out a bunch of guards or wings. And these combinations should actually work around LeBron James and Anthony Davis, unlike the first iteration of the roster this season. They will retain the ability to trade two first-rounders this summer or use non-guaranteed salaries to make a big acquisition, giving this haul even more credence than a move like dumping everything for Kyrie. The Lakers need to climb the standings to even make the playoffs, but they’re only 4.5 games back from the sixth seed and 2.5 games back from the play-in. If they get in, they’re a threat no matter their seeding. It was a masterful deadline move by the Lakers to give themselves an outside shot at winning another championship.
The Lakers did REALLY well at the deadline. Really, really well.
I certainly don't see them as #6 and a true Finals Contender though.

KOC isn't a moron, but #6 for the Lakers is far to high.

But it moved the needle from probably no play in to probably in the play in and that's about it. Surprised at this KoC take.
I'd bet virtually anything that they don't win a title this season, there is no chance of that.
They still have a good bit of work to do just to get to the play in, that's not remotely a lock. They're not likely to get to a 7th seed, so then they have to win 2 straight games just to make the playoffs.
All in all, they're going nowhere this season. Nothing has changed in that regard. Only thing that changed is that Pels pick probably isn't looking quite as good as it did 2 days ago.

At this point, the lakers could beat anybody in a 7 game series.
We need AD to be hurt as often as Zion/BI if we want that pick to be a good one.

That's probably a fair listing of us. We can make a run if everything breaks right.

Too low.

Easily better than those 3 teams.
In no order I have us behind:
Nuggets
Suns
Celtics
Bucks
Sixers
*Clippers* (if they stay healthy and play at their potential but I have zero faith they ever do)
Grizz/Cavs/Pels

I wouldn't want to play them in a playoff series...
1. they were already a tough win, but Westbrook going 3/12 would usually tilt the game away from them...
2. the NBA and ESPN are salivating at the thought of Lebron leading this team into contention and being competitive in his 20th season blah blah blah. I would expect the refs in any series involving the Lakers to be mercilessly one-sided

The Lakers are dangerous IF they get into the playoffs, simply because of who is on their team.
Them getting to the playoffs will be a problem if LeGM and Douche Flavored Ruffles come up lame down the stretch.

I absolutely do not think they can beat any team in a series. If they get the right matchup, sure they can maybe win 1 series. But again, that's provided they play at a level we haven't seen for 2 years just to get to the play in then win 2 do or die games just to get to the playoffs.

No they couldn't, in fact just the opposite is correct. They could beat anyone on a one off where LeBron scores 40 and AD goes 25/15, but they would struggle very much beating a team 4 times, even with their new found "depth."

All of this. Even if they manage to somehow get into the playoffs, they aren't winning a first round series.

The moves the Lakers made are similar to when the Pels got QPon and Norris Cole. Replacing terrible players with non terrible players makes a big difference for making the playoffs. It's not going to be nearly as helpful in the playoffs where teams scheme to take away your bread and butter and dare the role players to win games for you.

We also can't forget that the Lakers are 25-31. If you need to go .500 to get the 10 seed, which is a fair guess, they have to go 16-10 the rest of the way just to make the play in.
They might go 16-10, but no one in their right mind would beat straight up that they will. They're fighting an uphill battle.

It probably matters though that we didn't have Lebron James.

The guys they got are game changing for them. I'd argue that a starting lineup consisting of LBJ and AD with any competent players around them can hang with anybody.
Now in the second unit they have guys like Rui, Schrods, Beasley, etc who can at the very minimum hold their own.
My starting lineup if I were them would be:
Deangelo
Reaves
LBJ
AD
Vandy
Second Unit:
Schroder
Beasley
Lonnie Walker
Rui
Bamba
I'm not saying I'd favor them over the Suns/Clippers, but I think they'd hang.

I think the lakers biggest improvements may come just from losing the personalities of Beverly and Westbrook.
Talent wise though, the only improvement is Vanderbilt. I think Westbrick and Russell are a wash and Bamba is a downgrade to Bryant. Beasley upgrades offense but downgrades defense.
Plus they’re still softer than baby shite
