Anyone here ever owned a Scottish Terrier?

Always wanted one and am curious if anyone here has any experience with the breed.
Any recommendations on finding a good breeder?
Supposed to be pretty cool dogs.

they're 'possum killing machines, have real hair too, so non-allergenic to those predisposed

I've had one and was a great dog. Individual dogs vary but the breed tends to be very independent to the point of being stubborn, they usually bond more to one person rather than the entire family, need a fair bit of exercise but a lot of mental stimulation or they'll create their own regardless of what it may do to your belongings. Generally they do better being the only pet in the house and they can be rather more vocal than some others.
I liked mine and wouldn't shy away from another one but I just found other breeds I enjoyed more.

Haven't owned one, but did work with one for years doing Pet Therapy at OLOL children's unit. And the one I worked with was a great dog. He was a very sweet and very loving animal, and was great with the OLOL kids.

There is nothing in this world that a Scottish Terrier likes more than killing a snake. I've seen it...they freaking love it.

Its a terrier ... they like killing little shite, bark a lot and generally dont listen/hard to train.
Friends have had them for yrs and we inherited a mini schnauzer, the german version of a scots terrier ??

I owned one for 16 years. Probably my most favorite pet of my life, but...
she was very stubborn! When she was anxious she would eat anything she had access to, like floppy computer disks, berber carpet, towels, nails, bricks. Obviously the proverbial cast iron stomach. During her towel/carpet stage, we often had towel and carpet laced poopoo in our backyard.
Train them early and quick before she decides her own way of doing things.
Mine did not like sitting in your lap which meant she was NOT going to sit in your lap. She loved jumping on my back, no matter what task I was attempting. Like she was a mountain goat or something.
She and my westhighland white terrier fought about once a year. They tried to kill each other every time. She usually got the best of him. I got stitches more than once trying to break them up.
Super strong, super athletic, and determined to kill/eat most anything alive.
Based on my little experience, I would not want a male Scottie.
ETA: She wasn't as yappy as any of the schnauzers that I've been exposed to.

Yes, have had 3 over the years. We got our current puppy from Southern Scotties in Amite, La. LINK She is about 10 months old. Great dogs that can be stubborn. In the past we had a Great Dane that our previous Scottie got along with. Cannot stress enough they need to be leashed if outside a fenced yard. They will run off as if playing a game with you. They become hyper-focused on anything moving on the ground, too. I had one push the window button to roll down my rear window while driving and jump out to chase a squirrel while driving. Fortunately she was OK. Made sure that didn't happen again.

I have a Scottish Terrier/Spaniel Mix (think Blue Dog paintings). Grassy1's summary is dead on. I'm in the blanket stage now lol. My dog has a red blanket so finding red strips in his poop has been hilarious.
Mine was a rescue pup. About 2 when I got him and I've been training him the past few months. He was stubborn at first, but once I started "dominating" him, he started listening. Haven't had any issues in close to two months now.
He's great with kids and other dogs. He also really loves affection. Sits in my lap every night. Overall a great dog and glad I did it.

I’ve got a Cairn terrier. And she’s a great dog. Great personality and interacts well with people.
About 100 years ago the black ones (Scottish) white ones (west highland) and brindle (Cairn) were separated into different breeds. They are all 3 great breeds and very similar.

I had a Scottie for a short time. She was a mean, cranky bitch. Hated everyone in our family except one daughter. Would've eaten a brick had I given her one. Nothing was safe around that dog.

seems the consensus is that these are some pretty stubborn dogs but that's expected with a terrier.
How were they on walks? Are they good to go for a long walk around the neighborhood?

We have a Scottish Fold kitten, close enough.

Yes, they are but constantly stop to sniff/inspect.

Recently bought my first Scottie. He is 18 weeks now and has been amazing. My wife has the option to bring the dog to work, and WFH so we can show him a fair amount of attention. He gets along with the other dogs although seems to be somewhat bothered by large dogs. So far has been great with kids and visitors.
Very trainable. He is already potty trained and has learned tricks and commands. I bought him from a breeder in Denham Springs.
Buyer beware is they do require a lot of mental stimulation. Almost as if he will force you to play with him. On walks, be patient, it's more sniffing around than actually walking.

When I got married years ago, my wife and I wanted to add 2 puppies to our family of 2 daughters. We got an English Bulldog and a Miniature Schnauzer. I had to re-home the Bulldog due to my 5yr old’s allergies. I had the mini-schnauzer for a decade and have only had mini-schnauzer’s since.
Julius was 20lbs, didn’t shed and was very smart. Loved to ride the 4-wheeler, and was content going on a miles long walk or watching tv. Very loyal, just wanted to always be with the family. Small kids would pull his ears, didn’t mind a bit.
