I’ve never had one myself but the owner of the lodge I go to in South Dakota in the fall has one. He is more of the family pet but runs With the Labs around the property when we aren’t out hunting pheasant.

But what I know about this particular Scottish Terrier is that he likes to eat pheasant heads. He sits in the front of the little bus and when we finish one field we get back on the bus to drive a mile or so to the next field. As we get on the bus, we just stack the birds up front. I have seen this dog tear off the heads of a dozen or more pheasant in a 2 hour period and devour them like he was eating popcorn.

I admire that tough little SOB. He can go to town on some pheasant heads.

My grand parents did. Stupid fricking dog. Bit a kids face once and somehow my grandfather didn’t shoot it.

I've had one for about 10 years now, she is very loyal to me, my wife, my mother in law and sister in law. She will not let anyone else touch her but she isn't mean about it. Just kind of gives a side eye and walks away. My mother in law has had 2 with one just recently passing away at 14. She was very friendly and would sit on anyone's lap.

Both dogs are/were very smart. Mine never went through a chewing phase and has had free run of the house since she was a puppy. We got both from the breeder in Denham Springs. No health issues with any of the ones we have owned.

Had one for 2 years. He was smart but very strange. Also had horrible skin allergies. Tried foods, shots, meds. Nothing seemed to work. The vet ended up taking him and sending him to some place that specialized in rehabbing animals like that. She suspected it was from inbreeding. He also ate my drywall. Through the paint.

When I was very young, a very rich friend of my Grandmother had a pair (one white and one black). She lived in an apartment with expensive rungs and furniture and two cute and really well behaved dogs that didn't want to play with this stranger who was about five years old. To me they were really memorable neat smallish dogs.

Yes. I have a West Highland White Terrier which is super similar, and her skin is a constant nightmare to deal with.

My parents got empty nest syndrome and ended up getting several dogs, one being a Scottish Terrier. I'm not a dog person but I absolutely loved that Scotty. He was independent and bull headed but we never felt that was a negative thing, just his personality. He got along great with kids. Whenever I'd visit my parents he would run up to me and roll on his back so I could scratch his belly. I was the only person he would do that for. My parents had a cat that was mean as hell and hated all dogs and wouldn't let any dog near him, but for some reason he liked that Scotty. They would hang out with each other. When that cat was on his death bed the Scotty stayed by his side at all times. I always thought that was pretty admirable of him.

Can't testify to the Scotty but we are on our second Irish Terrier in the last 13 years after having labs for more than 30. We generally had two labs that would work ducks, dove and quail (although not as good as the other birds.) I have to say the Terriers have stolen my heart both have been jewels....BUTif you are not going to put in the training when they are young you are looking for trouble. They need lots of time and attention for the first two years from you and your wife...Dont know how they would do in an apartment. We have the room and also a large fenced in area for the necessary laps...My male never backed down from a fight which we couldn't control....It was like a switch in his brain strike first...No sniffing or forplay it was all teeth and I can't imagine he never got crunched.....Possums, raccoons, and snakes there was no fear....And when it was time to watch tv he was on your lap and traveled like a pro...I am a big fan of the Irish, and he was a family dog and never met a kid he didn't worship. We have a 3 year female now she's great just a little timid but a dog that will keep you laughing.

About 100 years ago the black ones (Scottish) white ones (west highland) and brindle (Cairn) were separated into different breeds. They are all 3 great breeds and very similar.

We've got a Westy, she's hilarious. Anytime she goes out the door, it's time to kill shite. She lives for it.
She's good in the house though, never tears stuff up, easy to train, she's not a lap dog though. Not overly affectionate. Every now and then she likes to play fight though, and she'll make you wonder if she's serious or not.

That’s the only dog I have ever been bitten by as a kid and bled. Knocked on their door, his parent let me in, and it ran up and bit me on my belly. Not a fan, ha

My mother-in-law does. Always has two. They're awesome dogs, but never live past about 7 years old. Make sure you get pet health insurance. They're prone to tumors and all kinds of stuff

They like to play and enjoy a wide variety of foods. The one I had growing up loved pork. We called him Sgt. Sausage.

looks like this is extremely common with them, would much rather sit on the couch to the side of you than in the lap which is fine.

Worried about how it would be around my 5-year-old but looks like most have said they are good around kids except for the few who got bit .

thats odd most people have said theirs have lived to at least 12.

The breed also seems pretty healthy overall.
