I’ve been in favor for it for 3 decades, Low-T.

I'd prefer the States to collect and pay the federal. Big time not a fan of federal taking money directly and then bribing states with their constituents money.

I would be fine with it if they locked the rate into the amendment, this would keep Congress from using it as a political football.

Dumbest idea ever and the only reason anyone is in favor of it is because the Republican idiots in the House proposed it.
And that’s the only reason you think it’s dumb……that, and it would put an end to your and Rachel Maddow’s whining every four years about wanting to see the GOP nominee’s tax returns.

Penalizes consumption and rewards savers. Everyone pays regardless of income. What’s not to like?
Posted on 1/29/23 at 4:28 pm to slaughlin
No. Because they will get a national consumption tax and then immediately reimpose an income tax "on the rich". Treble taxation.
Hard pass.
Hard pass.

frick no! I am not in support of MORE taxes.

Explain. In detail.
It would be an instant 30% inflation on everything. That would drive all of the lower classes to abject poverty. Also, the impact of such a tax would be devastating on the wage earners while substantially increasing the wealth of high wage earners. It is the very definition of a regressive tax system.

Anything is better than what we have. I would prefer a flat tax. Consumption tax would cause lots of people to accept cash only and under report sales and take less. I don't know how you could police it.

All taxes should be point of sale. Property tax is a scam. A simple man’s view

There are millions in this country who cannot afford the basic levels of consumption required to live. They can’t be “savers.” This would drive them below survival.

There would be a good number of small businesses that would go "cash only".

If it helps get rid of the irs. And they don’t add a flat tax on top of it. I’d rather do a flat tax rate myself.

Good, exempt food and drugs.

As opposed to rampant inflation AND income tax?

I think a lot of people have the misconception it wil be like their local sales tax. Like around 10%. But the federal will be ON TOP of your local tax. And will need to be around 30% to have any hope of funding the government i line with what voters demand.
So the combined rate will be running 40-ish% in most places. That presumes FICA taxes stay in place.
Most people dont appreciate how much “the rich” are funding the government. Spreading it out means high rates for A LOT of people that currently pay little to nothing.
Ultimately that’s why it will never have any chance of passing.
