Disney’s Splash Mountain Takes Final Lap After Controversial Past( racist)

Riders took one last journey through Walt Disney World’s Splash Mountain in Florida Sunday, according to the Orlando Sentinel, after the racial justice movement of 2020 sparked renewed criticism of the ride’s connection to the controversial movie Song of the South and Disney announced it would refocus the ride on The Princess and the Frog, a film that features the first Black Disney Princess.
quote:“While the ride is considered a beloved classic it’s [sic] history and storyline are steeped in extremely problematic and stereotypical racist tropes from the 1946 film Song of the South,” the petition reads in part. Disney bends the knee
Splash Mountain—which opened in Disneyland in 1989 and Walt Disney World in 1992—is one of Disney’s most popular rides. The decision to shut down the ride arose after a Change.org petition received more than 21,000 signatures in an effort to push Disney to rework the ride. While many Disney guests remain unaware, Splash Mountain is a themed attraction based on Song of the South, a 1946 live-action and animated film that has been widely criticized for the way it depicted race relations in the post-Civil War South. While the film was re-released in 1956, 1972, 1980 and 1986, there never was a home release of the film in the U.S. and it’s not available on the streaming service Disney+. The film, which even won an Oscar at the time of release, is also known for the song “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah” which many believe was based on a racist pre-Civil War song. In 2020, Disney removed the song from the Splash Mountain ride. The Orange County Register reported the change in August 2020, citing a Disney statement which read, “The removal of the song from Downtown Disney’s background music is part of a continuous process to deliver an environment that features stories that are relevant and inclusive.”

Looks like they finally solved the problem of racism by shutting down this horrific ride that has delighted klan members for 40+ years.

Should have made it into a Pocahontas ride imho. It would at least fit some of the frontier narrative.

It's going to become a South Louisiana salt dome now. No lie.

Compared to?
It's the best log flume ride ever made.
You don't compare it to a roller coaster.
Though if you want to get wet Duddley do right or Popeye- Bluto's barge is better.

This is a big win for your side. At least act happy.

Is this a joke?
With a few well-placed social media posts, you could get 21,000 people to sign a change.org petition to reinitiate the fricking Holocaust.

The wokism nonsense surrounding this is annoying for sure. Separately though, the ride needs to be updated because it definitely feels oudated and low quality compared to modern theme park attractions.

I hadn’t seen the movie or read the books In probably 35 years so I had to look it up on Wiki. Apparently the Disney folks were concerned even upon its 1946 release that the film may be perceived as racist, yet they made it a ride despite the apprehension. For those interested, this line from Wiki points out what people likely find objectionable:
quote:
Criticisms in the black press largely objected to the reinforcement of stereotypes, such as the subservient status of black characters, costuming, the exaggerated dialect, and other archaic depictions of black people

Personally every time I rode down it I thought “I hate black people.”
Now what am I supposed to think?

The real answer to this is they can replace a “white” ride with another race ride.

Now they should have put those numbers up against the amount of people that would have signed for the ride to stay as it is. Squeaky wheel gets the grease i guess.

James Franklin Baskett (February 16, 1904 – July 9, 1948) was an American actor who portrayed Uncle Remus, singing the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" in the 1946 Disney feature film Song of the South.
In recognition of his portrayal of Remus, he was given an Honorary Academy Award in 1948, making him the first Black male performer to receive an Oscar.[1]
And in the attempt to be woke, they continue to overlook history.

Just change the theme and continue on.

I think it’s funny they deemed it racist but let it run for a while before shutting it down.
I think it’s ridiculous to claim it racist, but if that’s what you decide, why not shut it down immediately? Are they giving riders one last time to be racist?

I wonder if they will change the Little Mermaid ride to feature black Ariel? Actually, it’s only a matter of time, not if but when. My daughter (no pics) has her last HS National cheer competition there in 3 weeks. After going for for 16 years in a row (since she was 2), I do not plan to return. Can’t deal with the woke agenda anymore, AND the workers there suck now. Over the past several years there has been a noticeable change in how they interact with you. Some are even borderline rude. The fish is rotting from the head down, the “magic” is gone!
