I have been procrastinating booking a flight home from Italy this summer. Now it appears flight prices have gone up 30-50% in the last week.

How screwed am I? Or is there any chance they drop back down?

Probably not going to get all 30-50% back but just set a Google flight alert and you'll likely find a dip at some point, but taking the risk that flight completely sells out. Depends on how many options you have.

I'm helping a friend book travel for the week of July 1-8th, NYC to Rome. TAP has decent fares for less than $1000 RT. Your best bet may be trying just to get to a large airport stateside and book a separate ticket to your final destination

Thats exactly what we did. JFK to FCO. I ended up with 2 premium select tickets on Delta for about 1500 each. Somehow spotted a faredrop and added the MSY to JFK. The fare went so low Delta credited me 400 ish each for future use. I still need to book the JFK back to Louisiana, but have a few options and may stay in NYC for a day or so. I used google alerts and found the fare drop on a Sunday evening. I booked about 5-6 months ahead of time. United just posted a Europe sale. You could try IAH to FCO.

I was pricing for them out of IAH today and the best I could find was $1600 on Turkish

You may have to tweak your dates in italy for a more favorable fare. Try ATL and JFK. We also did Dulles to NAP last year with only 6 weeks planning. That was on united and stopped in Brussels. Virgin goes to Milan. I have never tried any of the pay to play airfare groups, but maybe someone has.

Sorry didn't realize not OP.

Search again. My google saved flights just updated and the prices were down. Also got an Email for new airline offering flights and sure enough it showed up in the flight search. I saw mid 700s jfk to Rome.

I've been looking for a few months now and they've gone up slightly over the past week or so. It looks like people are starting to buy as I'm seeing a few less seats available on the flights I've been looking at. Direct from Atlanta to Rome on Delta is ~$2100 right now. Comfort Plus is ~$2800.

Unless you just want to take a chance and wait in case they come down, I think this may be where they land unfortunately.

This is what we are looking at. It's significantly cheaper for us (group of 5) to fly to NY from ATL then fly over to Amsterdam/Paris than it would be to fly straight from ATL.

I just looked again today and coach is ~$2200-2400 and Comfort+ is now up over $3k. Tickets are starting to be purchased so I don't see them coming back down by much.

I bought tickets for a June flight on British Airlines from New Orleans to Naples (through London) about 6 weeks ago and they were $1950/ticket not including paying an extra $300-400 to pick your seat. By far the most I’ve ever spent for a flight.

Coach is now ~$3000 for the two direct flights to Rome on Delta four months out(June 23rd specifically). There are still a lot of seats left too. This is nuts.

There are only a handful of comfort+ seats left though.

Prices have sky rocketed. For sure.

I usually book 4 to 6 months ahead of time but always get refundable fare in case of deals or special offers.

Skyteam is running sub $4k business class flights for 2 (less than $2000 per person) starting in Munich.

I priced MUC-ATL-AUS RT for $3800 total for 2 in July

PSA for everyone: Search for flights from an InPrivate (if you use Edge) or Incognito (Chrome) or similar mode that clears your cookies. Close the window when you're done with the search.

If you use a regular browser without privacy extensions, the sites you're hitting know what you searched for this morning, yesterday, and the week before, even if you don't login.

It's super awesome to have to wait at baggage claim, re-check your bag, and go through TSA again, after usually changing terminals. Please do not do this.

OP, if you're still based out of DTW, make sure you look at non-SkyTeam airlines, since it's a Delta hub. You may have to take a regional to Chicago or Newark to catch a Star Alliance flight first, but it will usually be cheaper than taking the airline that has a hub at your airport.

Or (if time allows) book a flight to another destination in Europe that has a low fare. Stay for a few days then fly to Italy.

I was able to do that a few years back. Houston to Rome was very expensive but to London was MUCH cheaper. After two nights in London and cheap flight to Rome, it was actually cheaper than flying to Rome direct.

To be fair, I was flying to Rome by myself to meet some folks. So I was about to do London on the cheap.

Nonstop from IAH in July is $1560. Buy a lounge pass in Istanbul. 1 stop with Westjet (Star Alliance) and Turkish are $546 and $865 respectively. I'd take that Turkish fare all day.
