Spray foam insulation

Does anyone know roughly what spray foam runs per sq ft? Think I want to go with closed cell since its new construction and don't want it to rise a whole lot
Going to call and get some quotes but also found this product that is DIY.
LINK /
Comes out to $1.42 a sq ft. Has anyone contracted to have this done and what was the price for the job?
Trying to decide if this is a good deal or if a contractor can do it for marginally more.

I think your math is way off. That kit will produce 43cu ft, which comes out to about 12 sq ft. At 850.00/kit that is $69/sq ft. Also, I can guarantee that you will not get the volume they claim out of those kits.
Edit: Apparently my math is way off, disregard this post

I'm not sure where you live, but if it's in Louisiana and you're talking about spraying closed cell on exterior walls you probably need to do some more research. I had my roof deck sprayed with open cell as a retrofit (home built in the 60s) and we LOVE it. Love the cost savings, love the comfort, love everything about it. We've had multiple leaks (hurricanes) that we'd have never found if it were closed cell.

I’m interested in this for a very small job
Will it affect the existing drywall? I’m concerned with walls bowing

I'm in the middle of getting my 30'x50' metal building done, closed cell, 2" thick on the walls and roof, came out to ~$10K. Got several estimates and they were all about the same.

Anyone have a situation like mine:
I have a front porch and a rear porch that are under the main roof with blue vinyl-non-perforated-soffit-like material. There are 3 dormers (part of interior rooms) and quite a bit of attic on one side
The back porch actually has almost a whole bedroom on top of it.
Do they spray over that? Or does that screw up the building envelope so much that it becomes not worth sealing the top?

you spray walls with closed cell, roof with open
as far as leaks, unless you have torn tyvek, there is no way it can penetrate. If you have a hole in the tyvek, you have a whole in the brick/siding that you will see immediately.
what you talked about though is exactly why you put open on the roof though

I can’t give you a cost since I used spray foam on my house 8 years ago. I sprayed foamed my exterior walls, laundry room walls for soundproofing, and a couple of inches in the attic floor to seal ceiling penetrations. I used blown cellulose over the bottom 2” in the attic to obtain desired R-values.
Couple of things I learned:
1. There needs to be fresh air introduced into the duct system.
2. For new construction, the spray foam will expand beyond the studs. They uses a milling machine to mill off the excess so as to be flush with the studs. But the spray foam can push out wiring or PEX so that this milling machine will damage it, Care shall be used while milling.

I used sunlight contractors and couldn’t recommend enough. They were amazing. Open cell spray foam in attic for an old home. 2,200 sq ft back in 2021. It was $1.84/sq ft

3 month old quote for 50x65 barndo, roof and exposed sheetmetal in 2-3" closed cell, 12' and 10' walls 2-3" in open cell was $17,400 He said at that time prices would be falling. Good thing I'm a slow worker.

I had the underneath of my raised house sprayed with 2in of closed cell (1800sf) for $2/sf.
As others have said, closed cell on walls and below raised floor, but open on underside of roof deck.

Not sure about price but that is defiantly not a diy project.

As the first response to my thread, I was really disappointed with myself until I saw your edit. I got a laugh.
Thanks for the responses and tips about closed cell in walls and open cell on roof. The site didn't really go into detail on that.
ETA: I am in Texas West of Fort Worth (Weatherford).

Why do you say this?
I'm not a builder by trade, but I'm far from a novice at building and DIY. Having said that, I've never done spray foam insulation. It doesn't seem like anything more than time consuming. Or any more challenging than anything else I've been able to do. Do you have an experience as to why you say this.

First of all I’ve seen at least 2 times that experienced contractors ( not foam guys, but people that have been in construction for years ) didn’t spray it correctly and the foam caught on fire. It’s a chemical reaction.
And second it’s a science on how a house should be insulated, if done incorrectly it can and will cause mold and mildew issues..
That’s just my two cents, if you do decide to do it yourself do as much research as you can.

Oh and you can’t, or shouldn’t spray closed cell on roof decks because if the roof leaks it needs to drip through.

For those who added open cell to roof of existing construction, did you seal the entire attic or keep the same ventilation?

If you’re doing 2 x 6 framing I’d consider Spyder Insulation vs foam. On 2x4 framing you’ll notice considerable difference but on 2x6 it will be pretty indistinguishable. More expensive than batt insulation but much less than foam.

To do it right the existing insulation on the ceiling needs to be removed and the entire attic needs to be sealed.
