For those that CCW

I dont go to New Orleans by choice because I don't want to have to use my CCW. When I do go, I don't carry. I dont want my options to be give my gun to a perp or shoot the perp. I'd rather hand over the expired credit cards and fake money in my extra wallet that I carry for "mug money" when I'm there.

My wife and kid are not allowed to go, period. Took some convincing and arguing a few times, but when my buddies wife was carjacked at gunpoint in broad daylight in a nice place, that ended the arguing.

It's mini-somalia over there. Sure, your odds of being killed or maimed are fairly low in the grand scheme of things, but they are extremely elevated relative to other places you could be.

Nothing has happened to me personally, but I had a friend and former colleague of mine visit Nola with her husband and she caught a stray bullet in her leg while walking down Canal St. at about 3 in the afternoon.

By some miracle the guilty party was caught and served time.

Crime in New Orleans is terrible, fo sho. I am in the uptown and mid-city area all the time and have not had an issue or seen anything personally.

Lived in NOLA for 23 years.
Car broken into near Fountainebleu 2001.
Car broken into outside Igor’s in 2004.
Car broken into Union Street 2016.

That’s basically it. As someone else said, awareness goes a long way.

I had my car broken into one night in 2007 when I was living downtown and a junker stolen and recovered same day sometime in the 90's. My parents have had their cars rifled through. I also have Lakeview friends that have had their car windows busted. But no one I know has had their home broken into, been mugged, been shot, been carjacked, or any of the stuff you see posters on here so worried about in terms of visitng the city.

I don't get your point. YOU are the lucky one here. Do you get that? A 70yr old was dragged to death last year in a carjacking and her family got to see it happen over and over live on the new for weeks. The days of downplaying shite in this city are done. Wake the frick up.

Huh? Specifics matter. You’ll have people saying they know someone that was mugged but don’t divulge when and where then turns out they were in a backstreet off Bourbon at 2am.

New years eve, across from where I work in Mod City, attempted car jacking gone wrong. One of the car jackers got shot and killed. Dunno of it a ND or of there was a struggle.

I'm not saying it's easy for these things to not happen to you (and i don't know what you look like), but criminals typically aren't going to mug a 6'1" 250lb man that looks like he works out and probably carries a weapon, and they aren't going to carjack him in his 4x4 truck.
Now take a guy that's 5'6" 145lbs driving a volvo car, and that's a much easier target.

I know of 3 people that have had their car stolen in the last 3 years. 2 of them were parked at the superdome. 1 lives in NO and the pieces of shite broke into his house at night, took his car keys that were hanging on some hooks right by the door, and then quickly stole his car. Happened faster than he could get down the stairs and shoot them, which he was ready to do. All 3 got their car back.
I have 2 friends who have had their car windows broken at Pels games, both last year.
and I have a good friend who was robbed of his phone and wallet off Bourbon late after a football game a few years ago, but i blame him for being a dumbass and not telling anyone he was going back to the hotel by himself. Being a little guy, and being really drunk, he was a very easy target, especially when you get away from the crowd of Bourbon st. But that's still a dumb thing to say, that it was his fault he got robbed.

Got my windows of a new car smashed at a mid-city bar parking lot last year. Stole all my buddys luggage and computer who had just arrived in town to visit.
2 weeks later, another friends truck windows smashed at his gf’s lakeview house. They came back the next night and stole his truck.

I'm in nola on average one night per year on average over the last 5 years or so and thanks to this board i'm much more hyperaware of my surroundings than the average tourist.

Haven't personally had anything bad happen to me yet, but outside of one instance I followed the nola rules. Don't walk alone or in dim lit uncrowded areas (got away with this one once), don't drive your own vehicle anywhere, don't look the crackheads in the eye.

I'm usually in town for a game so it's when there's a large tourist crowd and you can blend in, which probably helps. I know multiple people that had their cars broken into this year that were in town for the FSU/LSU game. We parked in a paid lot across from the Air BnB. While there was busted glass on the ground everywhere, the car we were in was unscathed. I feel like that's just luck of the draw when it comes to parking in NOLA though

I don’t think YOU get the point, that’s the exception, not the rule. Crime has increased and needs addressing, but statistically speaking you have a much higher chance of dying/being seriously injured in a car wreck on your way into the city.

I always drive my hooptie shithook Trailblazer to Nola. No self-respecting thief would steal it and there is nothing in it worth stealing.

One of my prior hoopties was a 1991 Lumina. When it had 400k plus miles, someone broke into it and punched the ignition lock where it oculd be started with a screwdriver. It appears they cranked it up, looked at the amount of miles, and said "frick it." They didn't steal the car. I did have to use a screwdriver to start it until the transmission failed at 419k miles. It was blown up in the movie "Battle L.A.."
