I lived in Greenwood for awhile at one point as a younger fella, *that's on the Texas border down I-20 from Shreveport* and my landlord back then had two deer he shot in that vicinity that were bigger than this deer and they both had that forked point just like this. But his were bigger and the first time I saw them I asked what state they came from because I assumed they were Mule Deer. One had it on both sides on two tines if memory serves which is iffy but there ya go.

He didn't want to tell me where he'd shot them once he told me they were whitetails but over the years admitted it. This deer obviously comes from the same gene pool.

So there's a local genetic example from a spot in Louisiana.

What you got. Rat out your old deer camp.

If Louisiana reduced its buck tags, the deer in this state would turn into monsters. They want to get big, but T-baw has other designs on that, t.

Kisatchie (areas i hunt at least) have tall, dark racks, similar to what you linked. Beautiful IMO.

Can also attest to the cow horns here locally.

Evangeline parish produces a distinct gene of button heads and spikes. Nothing lives to be bigger than that bc they are all considered cull bucks once they hit 60 lbs and have to be shot and made into smoke sausage right away.

Used to hunt Yazoo City area.

Giant 6 points. 20-21 inch main beam 6 points. My dad has one euro mounted. Strange

Go read up on the ms state studies.

You can transplant deer from what people would call a "good genetic area" to a area with poor environment and nutrition and next year the racks are not there.

Only in captivity do genetics matter.

Environment, nutrition, and age grow horns.

Yup! They took deer from the 3 different ecosystems in Miss. The Delta, Piney woods and coastal regions. Provided the exact same nutritional needs and the coastal and piney woods deer were equivalent to the delta deer within three years.

It’s all about nutrition!

This is not on topic. He's talking about trends. I have seen several.

This is patently false.

As I’ve read, genetics is the least important factor of the 3 in antler growth, but doesn’t it play a large role in number of tines?

To add to your point, only 4 things determine antler and body size:

sex
nutrition
genetics
age

Of the 4, age is the most easily controlled in a wild herd.

Tune, would love to see something like Georgia does in select counties. Have Parish wide restrictions, such as 20” beam or what not. Louisiana hunters are just too good at killing for the herd to reach its potential.

Too good at killing young bucks, while letting does walk. In most parishes I’d bet that the doe to buck ratio is at least 2:1 in favor of does. When it should be 1:1 or 2:1 in favor of bucks.

Yea because of people like my dad, who’ll “ask” me to shoot does but I’ve never seen him shoot one in my lifetime.
