Are people like Gaetz and the young crew of the House want to make this a referendum on policy or do they just let it go and the party becomes more liberal fiscally and socially?

He will be the weakest speaker in recent history. Probably won't be able to hold the position very long, no R speaker will be very consequential for this 2 year period. The republican caucus is just too crazy to be effective at anything but delay, saying no and halting any improvement in American governance.

He’ll be Speaker. The agitators always get in line like good boys

For better or worse, Scalise will be Speaker.

Scalise is no Jim Jordan, but IMO he'd still be better than Boehner, Ryan, and certainly McCarthey.

Well, considering the budget deal signed right before the Christmas break pretty much neuters the house for 2023 and 2024 is an election year nothing will be done at all.

That budget deal was the swamp killing anything reform or investigation into Biden’s wise.

This is my prediction as well. And my assessment.

If anything, Scalise is the most palatable alternative to McCarthy that has been floated. Plus - He’s from a red state so there are political consequences to him for crossing the Freedom Caucus.

I’m on team Anyone But McCarthy, but Scalise could win. McCarthy needs to to be taught a lesson.

Damn, Fox is all in for McCarthy… just turned on tv and Griff was lambasting Goode for putting up resistance to McCarthy.

Was as biased as CNN

It looks like he has a fight. We shall see if the opposition caves or digs in their heels.

I support a younger group but they aren’t rallying and putting a name forward.

And fox is bashing the rebel republicans saying how it’s just selfish and crazy that they wont toe the line and vote blindly for the Republican proposed speaker.

So speaker doesn't have to be a seated member of Congress... If it comes to a second vote, does the resistance throw a name out there that isn't currently a member?

World would stop spinning if it was Trump

And now you have Newt on there claiming the resistance group isn't voting against McCarthy, they are voting against 215 members of Congress.

It’s a mess right now but I still think folks fall in line. Either to his credit, or for his own survival, McCarthy allowed for rules debate and has agreed to almost every demand from the freedom caucus. He finally just relented on the vacate the chair rule. Now any 5 members from the majority party can call for a new speaker at practically any time.

There are some folks who are just never McCarthy’ers but at least they have some cover with the rules change.

They don’t have the votes to get someone else except maybe Scalise. They need to be smart here. They need to understand what hand they have and how to play it. It’s not going to do them or anyone any good if they hold out and burn through their political capital by opposing McCarthy only to see McCarthy end up being the speaker anyway.
