Been driving an 18 wheeler the past 3 years and decided I'm gonna settle down and trying something new.

Friend of mine hooked me with with up with a contractor and I will be doing a new construction turnaround in January as a helper.

My question is what exactly will I be doing? I like to have an idea of what I'm about to do and want to be able to make a strong first impression.

Any tips, advice, personal experiences would be much appreciated.

Heck even a recommendation for an electric book would help too. Thanks.

I’m amazed this handle wasn’t already locked up for someone’s alter.

Make sure to show up with your conduit stretcher on your first day.

They always ask the new guy to touch that wire and see if it's hot

You'll be running conduit, pulling wire, and setting panels. You're labor, friend, not an electrician. The real electricians will terminate everything.

Sounds like pulling wires but I’ve never worked as an electrician helper.

Wiring panels, running cable and wire, tracing grounds, testing equipment, getting demands from engineers you don’t like, stuff like that. When it is hot cold, rainy, and just plain bad weather, the work will be outside.

Oh wait helper, you will be doing all the shite no one wants to do, clean up and grunt work.

I did for a couple of summers in the 90s. I originally thought I wanted to be an electrical engineer.

You will cut conduit, bend conduit, and hang conduit raceways.

You’ll basically be doing all the hard work as the plant electricians quality check your work and take it really easy. But you’ll make some good money even as a contractor for turnarounds.

You’ll never sweep up, so that’s a positive.
