Why do y’all care so much about stars and recruiting rankings?

Really, it comes down to a handful of players in each class that make up the starting 22. Looking at Bama 2018 recruiting ranked #5 by 247 their best players were Surtain, Waddle, Slade Bolden.

In contrast, LSU’s 2018 class ended up ranked 15, but our best players were T. Marshall, Chase, Rosenthal, Clark, D Lewis, J. Jenkins, so LSU despite being ranked lower tied or an argument can be made we had a better class. We definitely had the best prospect in Chase.

LSU developed chase and Burrow enabled him. He was by no means the “best prospect”

When a kid is ranked 5 stars they have a real chance to be special

Harold Perkins
Will Campbell

Might have heard of those two guys.

Because the numbers make it obvious - 5 stars are substantially more likely to be impact players and make the NFL, followed by 4 stars, then 3 etc.

The more of those you have, the higher your class ranking, and the higher the likelihood that you find those impact players.

I’ve got no issue with our class, but the stars and rankings matter quite a bit.

Because history shows that teams with the top recruiting classes year over year are the ones that win consistently. The perfect is not the enemy of the good. 5* succeed at a higher percentage than 4* who succeed at higher percentage than 3* etc.

There’s a reason Bama, OSU, Georgia are filled with 4 and 5 stars and consistently in the playoffs. Yes, developing the player certainly matters but if that is all that matters then recruit some local 3 stars that would love to play at Bama. They’d commit as soon as offered and it wouldn’t take a bag of cash. Why wouldn’t that work? Well there are other guys with more talent. Who are those guys? They’re the four and five stars.

Ah another post about stars dont matter but usually the top 5 in college football usually starts with the top 5 in the recruiting rankings. Que the Justin Jefferson reference that everyone likes to point to not being a 4 or 5 star but forget about the 70% of the 3 stars that never get a start in their career at top fbs schools.

With the portal now a lot of the 3 stars that used to become starters as Jr's and Sr's at the school they originally signed with are leaving making it more difficult. So even more important now to get 5 star talent like campbell and perkins not 3 or 4 year projects.

5-stars are more likely to make game changing plays that can change the course of a game or a season, like Jalen Carter's sack/fumble in the Tennessee game and Ringo's INT in the Tennessee game.

Obviously it takes more than 5 stars to win championships, but 5-stars are more likely to make game changing plays and wreck shite.

As a Georgia fan only more recently have I realized this.

The stats don't back you up. Stars mean something. They don't mean everything, though. And melting over a single recruit is just not logical

easiest way is this.

the more stars = the more likely to be drafted into the NFL.

so a 5* is more likely to end up a drag table player than. 2*.

is this a guarantee?
of course not.

but it’s a relatively accurate predictor.

For the exact opposite reason Vanderbilt does not care about them. Hence, their program.

You realize that recruiting rankings (at least 247) already take this into account, right?

The highest-rated players for each team are weighted more heavily in the class scores. So if two teams have the same number of commits and the same average rating, the team with the more “top-heavy” class will be ranked higher.

I think people get way too worked up about the rankings and stars also. It’s all media driven. People are way too caught up in star ratings and rankings. They get caught up and can’t differentiate that program evaluation and needs overrule profit driven clickbait services. No offense to those guys. I trust in BK and this class that they are putting together.

This is different and I’m finally thankful. frick the rankings. If LSU is top 10 and fills needs where is needed and skill players are added that score points on any given drive then it was a success.

Well, that's just rude.
Has anybody from here gone to your Knitting Board and asked everyone why they care so much about yarn?

Florida had that same mentality under the last two head coaches. How did that turn out?

Statistically you have to push for higher stars. The metrics don't lie. What I love about Louisiana is there are a lot of outliers within the state.

We care because the teams that dominate college football - Bama, Ohio and Georgia - get the highest rated classes.

The way I look at it is with NIL you only going to get who you are going to get. Obviously the Ricks dude already wanted to go to Alabama so no matter what we did he was going to go there an they was going to match anything we could match. So crying over it is just dumb. You want to beat Alabama in recruiting you gotta go out there an beat that arse again an show these kids LSU is going to be a consistent winner under Kelly and Bama isn’t shite. Once we establish ourselves we will start climbing into the top 3 every year again in recruiting and get rid of this Alabama groupie syndrome.

I'd rather start a hand of poker with pocket kings than a pair of 3s, but yeah, I guess I could still end up losing the hand.
