Wondering if I could go somewhere and put cash from my trip on a card to use like a CC or debt card and also where the money is protected in case the card is lost .
I am going to Costa Rica and prefer not to use cash entirely and rather not use CCs while I’m there.

Any suggestions welcomed

What do you have against CCs?

No risk and many also carry various travel insurances.

I travel extensively throughout the Americas and use 90% CCs.

There are prepaid Visa gift cards that might work or you can pretend it is 1975 and get some Travelers Cheques.

Remarks aren't smart-arse.

Your options will be a prepaid visa gift cards- have to check if they work outside us due to money laundering laws or traveler's cheques which have 0 risk if stolen.

Both come with 4-7% fees at original purchase plus 7-10% transaction fees.

Cash and CCs with no foreign transaction fees will be your best bet and most widely accepted.

Agreed. A CC and the right one is the best option. I’ve had a card lost in a third world country and had a new card delivered to my hotel in two days.

Gets pissy when he doesn’t get the answer he likes.

With that attitude you’ll be lucky to come back from Costa Rica with both kidneys.

But hey, at least you’ll have your Visa gift cards.

Just put all your money into crypto. Then you can convert it back into colones when you get down there.

Online debit card? Like ally.com maybe?
I used my online bank exclusively to draw money overseas. Never more than $1k in that account keep my real account from being compromised.

We tried pre paid cards Visa etc… a few times with the kids on their school travel trips.. Credit Union we use had several options but they are constantly changing so check with your bank or financial institution. I’ve just switched to using CC for it instead. I use several on a trip since some can be replaced quicker than others. I try to leave one home in a hotel safe each day in case of theft or robbery while out. Hope that helps.

Bring cash, exchange some once you arrive into local currency or make an ATM withdrawal and uce credit cards for the rest. Make sure you have AT LEAST two with you at all times that do not have any foreign transaction fees.

We have a second back account at a separate bank from where we usually bank. We keep minimal amounts in there and find it when we travel domestically or internationally. If it gets stolen or hacked we don’t lose our entire fortune.

You don't want to use a debit card with ALL your money in there. Now you could use a debit card that's linked to a savings account, keep most your money in savings and then transfer what you need into the debit?

You definitely DON'T want a prepaid card, if you lose that your money is GONE.

CC's really are the best option and a debit card attached to a savings account to transfer in and out to pull out cash. I don't know of any CC"s that don't charge a cash advance fee?

I'm not in the industry and this is not exact, but basically when you charge a debit you are pulling out your own money and when you charge a CC you are loaning money. So if someone steals from your debit they are stealing your money, its harder to get it back. If someone steals from the CC company, they tend to make it easier.

NO doubt...when you refute charges on a debit card your money is gone until they grant it back. When it's done on a credit card you don't have to pay the bill so the money stays in your account.

There are questionable locations on any trip to a foreign country and for those places I'd prefer not to use cash or my CC.

Thats the only reason I was asking. Some travel more than others, that is why I posted here.
