Love him or hate him, the world recognizes the transcendence he brought to the game. Glad we got to see it in our lifetime.

Messi v Ronaldo I don’t really give a shite about just sad that it’s coming to an end and we will never see two players of that class at the same time ever again.

As a Madrid fan I still think what Ronaldo did at the club level is pretty special, but even saying that yes I think this cements Messi’s spot as potentially the greatest soccer player ever.

Like a previous poster said the fact that the mystique of Messi v Ronaldo at all levels of soccer is basically over is sad to me.

You really couldn’t have asked for a better sporting event and very happy to see Messi get his WC win. For me he is the best to ever play.

And that messi v Mbappe Netflix documentary in 2036 detailing each player’s rise career and this singular meeting is going to be outstanding. Making my kids sit through every minute of it.

Messi and Pele are the only two in the conversation at this point.
The goals per game and g+a per game for Pele was absurd.
Messi is easily in second in those two stats behind Pele, but he's doing it in the modern era. Less physicality, but more difficult in every other aspect.

Messi was just missing the world cup, and now he has it.

Could Messi make the 2026 squad at 39?

I think this is the ultimate retire on top moment. At least in terms of his international career.

On the club side, come on home to the Americas in MLS King Leo. I’d actually tune into some MLS matches then.

He already said he’s not retiring from international.

He wants to play as a World Cup champ he said.

Yeah I imagine he’s going to stay with the team for about a year but I’m sure he won’t play in 2026.

I disagree with Pele, who was he really playing against at the club level? I get his international merit is goat level but that seems to be it. Don’t forget Ronaldo has 5 champions leagues, has won silver in the 3 best leagues in Europe, 700+ club goals, all time leading champions league scorer, also won Euro 2016. The three greatest are Messi, Ronaldo, and Maradona and I honestly don’t think you can put one above the other.

Pele wasn't allowed to play outside of Brazil professionally.
