Google tells me almost a third of Texas budget is federal funding.
They wouldn't need any fed funding once their citizens don't have to pay federal taxes anymore and instead pay taxes to the Republic of Texas.

And let’s face it, a pile of the takers would haul arse out of a new republic founded on fiscally conservative principles. A pile of takers, I say.

Where are you getting that?
And why are you assuming Texas couldn’t attract companies (or branches of companies) that currently produce weapons in other countries?
What about building our own?
We aren’t looking to create a military the size and might of the United States.
Apart from maybe China and Russia, the globe is covered with nations whose militaries aren’t trying to use the U.S. as a measuring stick.
Texas has an Air Guard.
A Navy would certainly be a necessity.
FTR … I engage in “what if” discussions with folks daily who want to argue their reasons why Texas can’t go it alone; I’m not looking to convince anyone who disagrees.
There are many issues that will have to be addressed once we gain independence.
But not having every answer today isn’t reason not to continue.

The Supreme Court of the United States

I challenge you to point out the section of the U.S. Constitution that says otherwise.
Why? Federal law is not restricted to what is listed in the Constitution
Texas will lose this fight legally if it ever holds a referendum, and then militarily if it came to that. At least as long as it attempted independence without the consent of the federal government.

There are no examples of democratic independence referendums where the resulting vote has not been honored by the “parent nation.”
A quick Google search shows this to be false.

It’s definitely an interesting thought experiment… there are countless 2nd/3rd/4th/etc effects to independence.
One thing seems pretty clear to me… Texas would need consent of the US government in order to make it work… having a hostile neighbor to your north with such a long border (or even outright war) would be very difficult for a new nation to overcome.
Texas would need a trade agreement in place with the US from day one it would seem… or risk economic collapse.

You really believe taxes fund everything?

So you’d have a humanitarian crisis amongst those who rely on Medicaid and welfare. Perhaps a good thing long term, but a catastrophe short term.

Good thing long term, labor crisis short term.
In the end, would take 18 months to get better.

What a state (or states) can do, is begin the process of seeking a mutually agreed upon parting of the ways, and that process clearly exists, set forth by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 1868 ruling in Texas v. White. That ruling concluded that a state (or states) could secede by gaining approval of both houses of Congress and then obtaining ratification by three fourths of the nation's legislatures. In other words, it's a tough task.

Same thing that happened in 1861.

IF Texas truly went independent, then they would experience a flood of illegals like they have never seen. No more INS or federal border control. Texas would eventually provide it's own border security, but it would take some time to get this in order.

Never happen. Me thinks Americans love their SUV's, smartphones, and Netflix too much.

Before anything could happen the Supreme Court would need to reverse Texas v White.

I would be on active duty again with an American military force, that's what would happen.
But I refuse to serve in any platoon that has Aggies in it. Or T-sips. I refuse to serve in any platoon that has either Aggies or T-sips in it.

I’m not sure this can happen as the 50 states make up the USA. If a state secedes that is mutiny and basically leads to a civil war 2. The previous states that seceded made up the Confederate States of America.

No it doesn’t. Texas was a Republic prior to statehood, but the admission as a State was based upon a resolution, not a treaty. Texas can divide itself into 5 states, but cannot leave the US. That question was settled in 1865.
