You mean secession from the United States like happened in the Civil War. The states that seceded became at military war with the Union! That is what happens when you secede a state that is!

So what happens if the fed govt is insolvent and can no longer pay bills with funny money?

And don't say it can't happen. Every country is vulnerable. This sort of thing has happened before and will again.

On a long enough timeline the survival rate always drops to zero.

Ok, holy wall of text Batman, but it's 3a MT, and I can't fall asleep.

Re: social services … this link may address some of the issues you raise

EKG - I would think if Texas formed it's own country, all former US / now Texans would be considered as to renouncing their US citizenship and therefore lose their US benefits. For US military benefits, I think that is covered in DoD Financial Management Regulation Volume 7B, Chapter 6.

This was just a quick search, and I did no further legal lookups so there may be some legal loopholes that ultimately state otherwise. But I would think those benefits would be withheld as legalities would be argued for decades, in US courts probably.

In my opinion, it would never be allowed to come to a separation. The main reason being financing and resources.
States economies are too intertwined to each other, far more than the vast majority of the oeople realize. Plus I think we would quickly find out economically the sum is much greater than the parts. While Texas also has vital natural resources for the US economy, but also keep in mind, the US and allies have financing. A new government cannot run without foreign financing and foreign financing of Texas would not be tolerated. I would also wonder much of the current US debt Texas would have to take on. Texas would not be allowed to walk away without taking on some of that burden.
Then there is the fear of other states following suit, and further weakening both economies. This could allow other superpowers to test US resolve while tied up with inner turmoil which would be bad for all states economies.

Texas would ultimately bring the government to allow states a bigger hand in deciding their own policies though. The fear of economic fallout and other states domino effect would be too great.

I don't think it could ever come to violence. It happen in the Civil War, but I don't see how brother could kill brother now after much, much more intra US migrations.

Ok, now I am sleepy like most that took time read this.

“What would be the chain of events be to follow? Let's say a state like Texas or Florida simply said they would no longer be recognizing the federal government as legitimate, and will be doing their own thing going forward”
