yeah they just spent over $5b to widen it
Are they able to take the new super container ships? Also, I am not sure if Galveston or Houston has the ability to unload those ships.

NOLA port is long and skinny. Check it out on the map. Just doesn’t have the storage space to become a huge importer. The HOU terminals have seen their volumes explode in 2022. Texas always seizing on blown opportunities by the state of California due to additional regulation. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

Takes a hell of a lot longer to get from Asia to the East Coast due to having to go through the Panama Canal, through the Caribbean, then up the East Coast
Go west, not east.

Maybe wholesalers & retailers are tired of this once the shipment arrives
They are at least responsible to wear the masks to protect the trains from Covid

If you're leaving from India, sure but going West from Asia/China/Japan...not so sure about that route

There are a few mega ships that cant make it through the Panama Canal but most can

They screwed the entire country for 2 years bc they couldn’t get that cargo on land and distributed. Glad we are finally eliminating the bottleneck by using several ports around the country more.

What do they normally pack on those mega container ships?

Based on reports from Amazon workers, lots of dildos and iPad accessories.

Not sure why this is being downvoted ? It’s true. Hence why they’re building the new terminal in St. Bernard. They’re restricted on how much they can grow.

Frankly anything and everything. 90% of everything you will use in your life has been on or was made from something carried on a ship. The larger container ships rarely ever stop at just one port. They’ll load somewhere such as Asia or Europe and stop at 3-5 ports along the east coast or wherever dropping off containers and picking up new ones to return

I was going to say that part of the bigger issue with re routing them from the bigger ports to smaller ones would be pick up I'd assume? Those ships are just delivering one way, they have to be able to pick up also. Its not just a matter of bringing goods from China and Asia, its loading them with goods to go elsewhere?

Some uneducated responses in this thread. Port of Los Angeles is by far the largest port in America by volume and space. It’s truly massive. Mississippi River could only fit a very small portion of the traffic that Port of LA sees. But the union politics are the real issue holding up these ports. The union representatives are diplomats and they want to throw their weight to make bank. They can only throw their weight through strikes and threats. What they don’t fully consider is that their strikes and threats hurt the business that pays them. California is too pro labor to replace the union workers, but businesses can definitely stop shipping to Cali. And this union strife will cause revenue issues down the road, just like the railroad issues are going to. Businesses that use the transport are going to find alternatives that have less risk

I hear, from a friend, that mixing the two of those things is now a big deal.

theres a race in Louisiana to get some of this share too. Port of Plaquemines and Port of New Orleans are in a race right now
1) The NIMBY-ism in St. Bernard has been interesting to watch.
2) It is peak Louisiana BS that these are different agencies. There needs to be one state port for the lower river, so everyone can work together.
Having two state agencies actively work against each other is insane.
