Google map says take 85 straight through. I hear Atlanta traffic is terrible. Is there a better route to take and try to avoid Atlanta??

I would check Waze.

Otherwise - 285 might be a better option depending on where you're coming from.

That said, Atlanta traffic blows in general.

Driving from South Louisiana, I noticed 285 on the map, and curious if that would be an option.

Yeah, just depends on how bad the traffic is through town. Seriously, check Waze and Google Maps and see what they say.

When we drove back from the Helen area last fall, Waze routed across GA to Rome and then on to Birmingham. All back roads, but you were moving.

285 around Georgia 400 (19) is a shitshow these days because of massive construction. So it will depend on what day and time of day.
As others have said check Waze or whatever because sometimes it’s worse on the weekends.

It completely depends on the time of day OP. Atl will have traffic everywhere some parts of the day, so going straight through the shortest distance may be the fastest. But if you post this in the middle of the night at 10pm there will be almost no traffics so Waze will also take you the shortest distance route do to no traffic. So again, it’s all really a matter of the least traffic when you are driving through.

Live in Bham and go to north Georgia once or twice a year. This is the way we go. I avoid ATL in all things.

Unless they have 3 lanes closed for construction.
That’s why 285 on weekends can be so bad.

This. All depends on time of day. I like to hit Atlanta and go straight through town on 85 either middle of the day or at night.

This is spot on.

We went up that way a few days before Christmas last year to Blue Ridge and could not miss the traffic in ATL. It was moving, but still was slightly miserable...

Just kind of have to embrace the suck and you'll be out of it.

update these as you get close. Many times it takes us right through downtown. I'm from Houston and Atlanta traffic sucks. The only time I've ever breezed through town was early on a Sunday morning.

Use the HOV Lane if you can. And when you start seeing signs about Peach Pass get out.
