What is the worst invention in golf?

For me….it’s the golf cart.
I know that won’t be popular with the baws on this board, but I believe it has ruined the sport.
There is nothing athletic about playing golf. And if you’re tired and beat after playing a round driving right up to your ball, then you’ve got issues.
It was meant to be a leisurely, enjoyable walk, but everyone’s “time” is ruined by pace of play and lack of attention and courtesy of other golfers. It’s just a simple game now with time restraints of the busy man.
Six pack in the ice chest, tunes on Bluetooth and two or three off the tee. Walking would eliminate that dramatically.
And even the social aspect is diminishing. Covid brought single player carts and now it’s spend your time in your BarcaLounger cart and go home, instead of hanging in the 19th hole and helping the club.
And carts themselves are a drain on the club. The upkeep and maintenance isn’t worth the effort.
Alright….that’s my rant
Hopefully ya’ll got less hot button inventions.

I love walking when I'm by myself and wouldn't mind playing in a group with people walking. It takes more time, but not that much more if you walk fast and play ready golf. The problem is the fact that it's 107* outside in the summer and no courses have caddies, not to mention long walks between holes on more recent designs. I would love to walk, but won't begrudge anyone who wants to ride.
But walking and carrying your own clubs is a completely different game than golf in a cart getting drunk along the way. Not that one is right and one is wrong. To each their own. But it's apples and oranges.

This is the biggest hinderance, in my opinion. I've been saying for a while that I would love to walk, but probably 1 of the 5 courses around me are walkable because of the distance between a few of the holes.
If I lived close to Memorial or Gus Wortham, I'd probably walk pretty often. Those are great walking courses.

While walking is preferred and part of the original concept, some modern courses, either due to elevation changes or a spread out layout, are just not conducive to walking.

City Park in BR can be a joy to walk. Same with Webb. Hard out on walking Beaver Creek or Santa Maria.

Sounds like you want golf to fail honestly.
Worst invention is the divot tool that is bent and forces you to push up from the bottom of the ball mark. It’s the wrong way to do it and creates all the brown spots on the green. You’re supposed to “fold” the ball mark over starting from the highest point. A tool that makes people do it the wrong way is an abomination.

Those 2 really aren't bad to walk. There's a little space between holes, but nothing horrible.

Most people in LA have no idea what it’s like to really walk a course that has any sort of elevation change. Nothing in this state is difficult to walk. Even the bluffs is easy compared to nearly every other course in the world.

Worst trend is the ever decreasing lofts for woods. They call a 5 wood 18 degrees now. Mine is 21. My 7 wood is 24. Many 7 woods are 21. Year after year the manufacturers dial down the lofts on every club.

There used to be a 9 hole course very close to my house that was perfect for walking. The tee boxes were no more than 20 yds from the greens and it was an easy walking 9 after work. It was a goat ranch but a cheap place to walk 9 after work. It shut down earlier this year though.

5somes with five carts, the Yengling iced down, baw country blaring, carts getting off the path just past the tee and not getting on till past the green.
If that’s what golf needs to be….yeah, I hope it fails.

Courses also started getting more spread out. Walking Webb and walking Beaver are two different animals. Cart was a necessary evil to keep pace of play up… then they let women start playing.
