Quick Look at the Croatia vs. Belgium offside

Holy shite. Embarrassing. Fitting that a Premier League ref Anthony Taylor is the ref with a millimeter offside call. The Croatian player's very end of the shirt is offside. fricking stupid decision. It negated a penalty attempt.

Yea something has to be done after this World Cup. It’s affecting games.
I’ll argue that line is incredibly subjective as well and open to abuse.

How is it subjective? Are you suggesting that the line can be manipulated and isn't strictly generated by software? I have no idea either way, but I assumed these visuals are completely generated by the software, which is objective.
But yeah, I agree. The rule is dumb.

I thought it was number 9 they were looking at as offsides, so that VAR replay really threw me off.

I legit thought the VAR was to take away the dive to get the penalty

The football gods seemed to have evened things up with the Lukaka miss @ point blank range

And I welcomed our VAR overloads with open arms as an accountability system to FIFA corrupt match fixing. Boy how I was wrong not taking into the consideration the mispurpose-ing of VAR.

Take a look at where the white line is in respect to the players shirts.
Who’s to say where the shoulder even starts and ends?

The question should be: Is the line being decided by a human or is it being decided by software?
From a Guardian article LINK:
quote:
How does it work?
In a nutshell: artificial intelligence crunches location data to map the positions of players when a ball is kicked. If the AI adjudges that a player is offside, an alert is sent to the VAR showing the “kick point” of the ball and the line of offside. After manually checking that alert, the VAR official informs the referee and any on-field decision is amended accordingly.
The AI will also create a 3D graphic showing the line of offside and the position of players relative to it. That graphic will be generated after the decision is taken and shown to fans inside the stadium and on TV.
Assuming the article is accurate, the offside line in VAR is not subjective. Which makes sense, as it could take some time for a human to figure out exactly where the line should be, further delaying the game.

They need to change the rule to something like “majority of the torso” or something like that. A shirt sleeve or a hand being past the defender is not the spirit of the rule. I thought FIFA was considering re-wording it recently but I could be wrong

Lukaku has big money on Croatia going through

Garbage. Another example of why it should be where the feet are

They need to make it feet again. This playable body parts has been total BS.
Your feet carry your whole body into playing positions, and obviously all the parts that you can play the ball with. It’s something a lot more concrete and black and white.

At this point I’m all for the hockey interpretation (or football illegal forward pass) if any goal scoring part is onside then you are onside. I also think that interpretation will lead to more goals which isn’t really a bad thing for the game.

Exactly. I've had this exact conversation with a buddy of mine several times during this WC. If you're at the point where a VAR official or computer program has to draw lines to determine an offside ruling, then that's not a "clear and obvious error." shite like this is what turns people away from soccer here in the US.
Plus, Croatia not winning the group fricked my parlay.....so I'm also mad about that.

I do not understand the outrage at all.
It's 100% better than having a ref decide what is offside and what isn't.
As long as the technology is fined tuned, I'm OK with it.

It ruins the flow of the game and makes the games less entertaining.
The entire purpose of the sport at this level is to entertain spectators.

The spirit of the rule is not to take away a goal because nike used a slightly thicker material on its kits than Adidas.

I think his argument is more that it is better to have offsides decided by VAR than a linesman who is more prone to error. It seems that we all agree that the rule itself should be adjusted.
