A whole thread of people that still dont understand the game.

They didnt call offside on #5. The offside ruling was that #9 (who is well offsides) was close enough that he interfered with the play. That was made obvious when the ref had to go to the monitor. If they were just trying to determine if #5 was offside the ref would not have needed to go to monitor as that's automated.

Go get your eyes checked, gramps. #5 was the defender. #6 is who offsides was called on.

If you cant find number 9 for croatia in this pic and figure out why the ref was called to the monitor to determine if he interfered with the play and then ruled offside you should just give up

We've had dozens of those VAR pics like you posted this world cup, the ref is only called to the monitor if they are looking at something else such as whether or not the header was deliberate in the france-tunisia game yesterday

He didnt. He went to the monitor to see if the player that was offside interfered with the play

Isn't where number 9 is, what they should be comparing against?

And I welcomed our VAR overloads with open arms as an accountability system to FIFA corrupt match fixing. Boy how I was wrong not taking into the consideration the mispurpose-ing of VAR.

Please explain why the visuals of the VAR shown during the match show the offsides being called on #6, when the actual call (per you) is on #9. Are we supposed to trust your judgment over what the officials actually told us? If so, why?

Probably soemthing to do with the tracker in the ball and #9 not actually playing the ball

It isnt the referee who picks which 2 to compare on the blue offsides VAR pictures and he was pretty quick to rule offside when he went to the monitor so the clear offside on #9 is the only call which really makes sense for him to be that certain of it upon looking at the monitor

Donovan actually said the same in the USA broadcast LINK

When did we get to the current state of “only if the player is directly involved in the play” is he offside? I grew up and if you were in the field of play and offside, you are offside. As in, if you are considerably away from the ball you aren’t offside, but in that croatia play that was 100% offsides 10+ years ago.

Germany scored today also in what I would have called offsides easily. Ball was passed beyond one player that was offsides to another player that chested it back to the first player who scored. I don’t see how that is not offsides.

The entire point of offsides is to not allow the offense to get a head start, it’s like they are changing the rules in multiple ways.

The rule used to read, being in offside position and “seeking to gain an advantage”, meaning if you were trying you were deemed offside. You could kneel or peel away and not be trying and not judged offside. The verbiage was changed in the laws of the game 7-8 years ago to now reflect “gained an advantage” meaning not only do you have to try, you actually have to gain it. That slight change allows for some to be in offside position, and while maybe trying, not successful at gaining an advantage therefore not ruled to be offside. It allows for some grey area to not call somebody now, that was automatic 10-12 years ago. That means a decision has to be made differently by the referee.
