I went to the hospital ER (OLOL) with my Dad this weekend. It looked like Mogadishu in the waiting room. Nurse said it has been like that since Earl K Long closed. It just seems to me they need to open a new charity hospital. The free medical and paying people should not be in the same place.

No offense, but US citizens abuse it as well... I've had pt's come to the ED for a fricking cold...

It's been primary care for people on welfare for decades. The worst my wife saw was a woman on welfare complaining that 'my hairs hurt.'
Wife: 'You have a headache?'
Her: 'No, it's my hairs.'

Since the hospital loses money on these patients they make it up by overcharging people who carry insurance.

Isn’t is a coincidence that the healthcare went dramatically downward since Obama’s “this is a big fricking deal” health care program?

my dad arrived in a ambulance and in a coma and they left him in the hallways for hours and hours as he waited his turn in line behind idiots there for simple routine BS

It has been that way since the 1980s reforms tied to the amnesty IIRC.

You aren’t allowed to deny treatment based on legal status or ability to pay, which means you have no way to control how much gets spent on illegal deadbeats who don’t use a PCP.

My mom went to the ER in 2018 and was in a lot of pain. It was about a 2 to 3 hour wait. My dad called her PCP and he told him to go to Walmart and call for an ambulance(911). He met the ambulance in the parking lot and she was in the ER in less than 30 minutes. Found out a few days later it was tumor.

My dad is the chairman of the board for a small hospital system. My sister in law in a former ER and now Trauma nurse in that system.

40% of the budget is set aside for indigent care. I’ll leave it there.

Between that and ACA compliance, the only way hospitals even exist is if they have nursing homes or some niche product attached.

She got sick enough to have to go to the ER three times. The first time we had a bunch of her family at the house and as I was getting ready to bring her to the hospital because she was extremely ill one of them called an ambulance. Once I finished dressing and went out she was already in the ambulance. The ambulance did not leave for another 15 minutes and we proceeded to follow that ambulance to the emergency room at 40 mph. I could’ve drove her and gotten her there quicker which I subsequently did on two more occasions. That is why I did not call an ambulance.

There is only a few times I have been to an ER in the last 40 years that there hasn’t been a wait.

We didn’t have Urgent Care where I’m from in the 80’s and 90’s. People either went to the ER or to their PCP.

The ER was just as bad then, but for different reasons.

Last time I was in the ER I should have left an hour-and-half earlier than when I was released. I was in the room for over an hour before a nurse came back and gave me the paperwork for release. I waited another 30 minutes for them to come and get the paperwork. Then about a 10 minute wait at the checkout desk.

It’s not just that they are short staffed. It could go faster if there was better training.

Medicaid is the problem at the ER and now also at the Urgent Care. When people don't have to pay anything for care, they will abuse it...it's simply human nature. They don't want to go through the "hassle" of going to a primary doctor visit at a certain scheduled time, they'd rather just show up at the ER/Urgent Care at their convenience and pay nothing!
