So McCarthy is saying that unless the GOP votes correctly, the DEMS will have the speaker

quote:
Several top conservatives are warning that if House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy, the Republican nominee for Speaker of the House, does not win the speakership election on the floor of the House on Jan. 3, 2023, a “doomsday scenario” could emerge where Democrats undercut GOP power.
The Speaker must get 218 votes and the dems and the GOP will present their nominee.
quote:
Given the slim majority that Republicans hold in the new Congress—they have won 222 seats—a group of five or more Republicans banding together to vote for someone other than McCarthy–assuming all other members are present and voting for a person–could deny him the majority he needs to win the gavel.
The House will keep holding speakership elections until such time as it elects a speaker until 218 is reached.

I believe there are about 20 firm "no" votes so far.

If the Dems get the Soeaker with a minority of the House, anyone voting for the Dem should be drawn and quartered.

It's the Republicans though. I could see it happening. If a bald eagle holding a crucifix and wrapped in an American flag ran, he'd go ham on these motherfrickers.

Leave it to the GOP to be fricking morons

Hell, name James Woods as Speaker.
Test that argument that the Speaker is not required to be a member of the House.

I'm ok with it. You essentially get a Dem with a RINO anyway so at the very least they would know they can't frick around any longer.

pretty sure those NOs would also vote against a DEM.
So, unless there are some shithead Republicans that will vote for a Dem speaker, this won't happen.

Looks like this is the new tactic of the GOPe: outright blatant collusion with Democrat Party on a formal level.
The Republicans just did something similar in Alaska when a majority of them formed a coalition with Democrats to isolate and marginalize newly elected Republicans that refused to bow down to the GOPe and the way things had always been done.

If McCarthy knows he has no shot of winning it, I could see him whipping a faction to vote Dem as a “frick you” then claiming he had nothing to do with it.

What McCarthy is saying is, "If an establishment R can't be speaker we will give it to our Uniparty partners.

No, he isn't saying that at all.

I’m sure there are some.
A lot of them were just purged in the election but some remain.

I'm 100% positive that if there is a way for the Republicans to mess this up they WILL.
This is what I mean when I say they lead from a position of weakness.

That's what this homo is threatening, yes.

When Democrats are in power, they do everything to maximize their power and minimize the influence of their Republican opposition. However, when Republicans are in power, they do everything to minimize their power and maximize the power of their Democrat opposition, now in the minority. Democrats in control, they maximize the Overton Window shift. When Republicans are in power, they do nothing to pull it back – they actually do everything possible to maintain the shift.

Yes it would. There's been 3 so far saying they would work with the DEMS to nominate a "moderate" dem. One is from Nebraska

That isn't accurate. The Speaker will be a republican. Maybe just not McCarthy. That isn't going to result in a democratic speaker, just someone who is perhaps a bit more moderate and effective.

Elections have consequences, maybe letting the Dems get it will hasten the destruction of the GOP.

Scalise is the #2 guy. If McCarthy can't get the votes, everyone will fall in line with Scalise. I'm ok with that.
Actually, I prefer Scalise.
