Current truck is 2016 king ranch F150 with 98k miles. Need to upgrade to F250 to tow boat, and found same exact truck I currently have now (color, trim, etc) all exactly the same but a 2017 F250, kicker is it has 200k miles. After trade in I’d be on the hook for just under $10k for the swap, which is pretty minimal all things considered. Doesn’t seem terrible but the milage scares me. Thoughts on a 200k mile 6.7l ford diesel? Part of me hates paying to double my milage, but also thinking I could grab extended warranty to negate that and still get a decent deal.

Or alternatively there is a 2018 lariat ultimate pkg model for $55k with 80k miles that I’ve been looking at as well. Would be my first diesel, so hoping someone can sway me in the right direction. Not opposed to spending more for the newer/less milage 2018, but if there is no reason to avoid the higher milage truck it would be nice to save some money. Kind of feel like I’d regret losing my king ranch trim though.

How big is this boat and how often are we talking about pulling it? Diesels have this reputation of lasting longer than gas engines but that’s the old days.

Modern diesels do not last any longer plus higher maintenance and fuel costs really makes owning a diesel not worth it unless you’re pulling long distances very regularly. Add the fact this truck already has 200k miles

200k miles is not a lot on the engine it self. But the rest of the truck has alot of wear and tear. The transmission, front end parts, cab bushings, brakes. Has fuel system ever been replaced? Would pay for inspection by a legit shop if you're concerned. Make sure shop can do a thorough inspection.

I have a 2017 250 with the 6.7 in xlt trim. I bought it new in April of 17 and it currently has 142xxx miles . I change the fluids/filters (oil, fuel, transmission, diffs, and transfer case) by the book and only use motorcraft filters. Hope I don’t jinx it but this has been the best truck I’ve owned. Way more than enough power and gets good mileage as well. It’s quiet and comfortable. I stay on top of all the maintenance myself and feel that’s the key to owning these trucks .

As a diesel owner, I've had nothing but problems with the DEF system and if I could do it again I'd get the gas burner.
It's also only a tow pig and not my daily driver

Why don't you get a new 7.3 gas burner?

Market is insane for F250s right now. 4-12 month wait for orders. MSRP for used with 50k miles.

If you must go the 250 route, then go gasser. Diesels are 7-10k more up front and require 25-40% more on operating and maintenance costs. There are alot of F250 gassers out there that you've probably been assuming are diesels.

The 6.2 gas is tried and true. Very reliable, but lacks real power. The 7.3 is a few years old, has some issues(mainly with the 10 speed transmission) but if you can find a good one they are smooth and full of power.

The days of diesels lasting 300k miles and being bulletproof are over with. Technology, Engineering, and the EPA has advanced gas engine/trannys and crippled diesels.

Had a 2017 F250 6.7. Started having issues with it a 55k. I have a 2021 Silverado 6.6 gas burner and couldn’t be happier. I’m like you need to haul heavy stuff 10-15 times a year. Diesel doesn’t make sense unless it’s making you money.
