carfax, carmax, auto trader etc

define what you want based on search availability

buy used internet advertised price sets a baseline

establish financing before you talk to dealer

I bought a carmax 4x4 pu that was located in Denver had them ship it to a local carmax location for only 500 bucks. I got exactly what I wanted at a price that had a basis

I’ve actually made a lot recently. Since Covid I’ve bought 5 new trucks and sold them all for more than I paid. Takes time and diligence but I’ve gained about 30k in equity

Didn’t Tesla just file a lawsuit over that issue?

I’m in Austin but they let me “order” a NX 350 hybrid for the wife. I got to pick what they had coming in and pay a $1000 deposit. No mark up over MSRP but I’m sure they’ll try to sell me a warranty when it gets here. It’s been 2.5 months but the car should be here in two weeks

I think I'd rather paint houses... and I really hate painting. I don't have the patience for it. Flipping cars however takes things to a new level.

I agree and feel like I miss my calling. I could have been a professional car buyer for people.

Was looking at new vehicles a month or two ago, finally quit because almost everyone one was at MSRP+ and no one was willing to discuss. They all essentially told me they didn't have to come down from MSRP because the cars would be sold. Every lot from Mississippi to Houston had 1 or 2 cars on the lot but never the one I wanted. I could order it but it would have been a 1k to 2k deposit and some places told me non-refundable if I didn't buy from them.

I bought, my mother bought, and two friends of mine have bought cars over the last 9 months (all different makes - Mercedes, Mazda, Acura, Lexus) and none of us paid a markup. It depends on the car and dealership, but you can find cars without markups, but you have to look and call around.

I do know another friend was looking and walked away from a Kia and a Honda because those two dealerships added $5K markups, but only on certain vehicles.

I walked away, nothing is wrong with my vehicle as it's only 4 years old and 65k miles. I just wanted something new but I'm not paying MSRP or the mark up.

We just paid both of ours off and for the first time I have no desire to look for a new one. Usually around that 4 year mark I’m itching to get something new. There’s no way in hell I’m paying 100k for a Yukon or f150 in this crazy market

The markups will go away in time, but MSRP will likely be the cost of cars moving forward. Covid changed the industry and dealers aren’t going to carry the huge inventories they always have.

I live in Florida, I flew to Houston to buy a car/spec I wanted earlier this year. Look outside your area. You can probably find a better deal too with a more motivated dealership. I had a fantastic experience.

Met with a car salesman today. He had next to nothing in stock.

He claimed at the beginning of the year certain used cars cost more than the same make/model new car.
