Bombarded with food after a family death

My father died this week (not a seeking sympathy thread).
I don’t want to sound ungrateful but people have been sending more food than we can possibly eat and a bunch of it is going to waste. I appreciate the intention but it’s a much better idea to give a gift card or something. I feel bad that we will have to throw away so much stuff.

Sorry about your dad. I think you just wanted some attention and don’t care about the food. That’s ok.

We had casseroles for a month after our first kid was born. It is just something people do. It takes more effort than a gift card

I hear ya. I know people that do this all the time. Like someone is on their death bed for a week and as soon as they pass BOOM! Food starts arriving. I just don't have much of an appetite when dealing with the loss of a family member. It's a nice gesture and shows that people care about you and your family.

Perhaps you could look into one of them newfangled freezer things.

You're Baptists, aren't you?

Don't throw any of it away if it's good food. I'll come eat what y'all don't want.

When this happened to me I just tried everything and tossed the ones that were not very good. Unless everyone is a great cook you will have some duds you can toss out.

Southerners supply food when they don't truly know how to express their feelings.

That is how they express their feelings.

It's something we Southerners do. You yankees wouldn't understand.

Text everyone in your contacts the following:
“Thank you for your support in this time of our loss. In lieu of food gifts, we would instead insist on monetary gifts. This will allow us to appropriately honor Dad and none of us want to let him down in this time of his passing. Thanks for understanding!”
Seriously, sorry for your loss. It’s not a great century to be a Walrus.

Coordinate with the family when bringing food. Ask what day is open.

Sorry your dad died, here’s a $20 Cabela’s gift card

They are trying to remove the inconvenience of preparing a meal, not gift you something.

Trust me. It will end quickly. Enjoy it while you can.
