Not all 22ft "bay boats" are in the same category when talking about ability to operate in less than desirable sea state.
What do you have? How old is the motor?
this ^^^^^^^
side hull and transom depth are the biggest factors to consider if the boat is suited for open water.
also i wouldnt take an older engine out there, even if its been 100% trouble free. if you have an engine issue it takes hours to be towed in after many hours, if at all, hoping to find someone to tow you in.
if you have to call coast guard for a tow its gonna cost you around $15k because you have to pay for that type of service

Pick your days right
Make sure boat is 100%
Radio/VHF/EPIRB
Safety gear
Be prepared for anything
You’ll be fine
Only other thing I’d add that others may disagree with… leave your motor running the whole trip. I only say that bc I’ve seen some boats with horrible wiring/not set up that great charging and power use wise. Worst feeling in the world would be going to head in and can’t start motor. Would be different with 2+ engines.

This. I go out on calmer days in my 18 ft frontier. Just have a plan and use your head. Don’t stay out if it looks like it’s getting rough or is bad to begin with.

Use your judgement on this. I have dual cranking batteries with isolation switches and jumper cables for extra peace of mind. Fishing upcurrent of a rig, leave it running. Getting a little rough, leave it running. Downcurrent and it's nice out and plenty of boats around, ehhhh. Mine isn't very quiet and it gets annoying if you don't really need it.

Yeah more just personal preference and how well you know your boat I guess.
I just like the piece of mind bc I know that one trip a starter or some other stupid shite decides to break it would be when I’m 20 miles out and need to get home

It has a sticker on it that says "do not strike with hard object"
Whack it right there with a hammer a buncha times while your buddy holds the key in.
Trust me I'm a mechanic
With a new 4 stroke, I'd damn sure leave it running. Mine is a 2 stroke and it's damn annoying to be fishing on either side of that thing for a whole day.

We leave both running. We also hardly ever tie-up but that's just a personal preference.

1-3 foot max for you my friend

I never tie up. Refuse to do it. I let the ipilot hold us wherever we want to be.
It's hard to understate the usefulness of a spot lock trolling motor offshore. Its a complete game changer. You do have to keep the engine running and pay attention if you're up current though.
It's incredibly nice to be able to "anchor" upcurrent from the rig and fish off the back of the boat.

3 footers would be the limit in a bay boat for me, even then it’s downright dangerous and if one thing goes wrong you don’t have much margin for error. Hell, 3-5’s in my 26’ Glacier Bay is rough and that boat eats waves in a head sea. I won’t go out in the GB with a forecast of more than 2-3’s.

Yeah I mean I have 3 and I still leave them all running.

I've fished in 3-4' swells on the beaches of grand isle, it's really annoying but not terrible or scary. 2-3' with occasional 4' wind blown white caps on a 1-2 second interval is fricking brutal and not something I recommend doing. I never felt scared of capsizing or anything like that, but its not possible to fish in and it hurts your body.

We rolled up to the rigs one morning in a 24ft hybrid bay boat and as the light came up we noticed something on the corner. Two BAWS were out there in a 16-18ft flat bottom aluminum boat. It was a flat morning but not flat enough for me to be on that boat 10 miles out.

We saw an 18' express with 2 baws in it crushing nattys ~ 20 miles out of caminada pass one day when it was not like glass. Fn legends

See this all the time at Cat Island (~8 miles from nearest launch). Saw a group of 4 in a 14' this summer.
