I have a broadcast journalism degree. My journalism claim to fame is that I taught Patrick Wright how to use a cart machine in the KLSU newsroom.

I don't regret my journalism degree but I never worked in journalism.

The journalism curriculum did benefit me in the business world as I can write a great report when needed(just the facts)

i think alot of people would be surprised by "biology" or "biological sciences". probably a lot of people majoring in that trying for med/dental/vet schools but not good enough to get in. without the advanced degree those are worthless.

My suspicion as well. A lot of C- biology degrees that end up with menial jobs.

As an accountant I both love and hate my degree so it checks out with not being on the list

That’s exactly the problem. They’re to med/dental school what poli-sci is to law school.

Best bet if biology is your aptitude and you want something to fall back on is to go to a university with a molecular biology concentration (that’s where the jobs are) or go over to engineering and do chemical engineering with a concentration in biological engineering.

Edit: That or minor in business or computer science. Biology as a sole major is a bit of a scam. You have options of health professional school, advanced degree, or combining your biological knowledge with another skill set that is actually what makes you marketable, like professional writing or computer programming.

Edit: Bio students are usually reluctant to minor or double major with something else because, 70 percent of them are first-and-foremost pre-med students, and nothing scares a pre-med student more than not making a 4.0 GPA average because you took something a bitter harder than the typical rote memorization of qualitative data that is biology (i.e., very light on math).

I think the word has gotten out since I was an undergrad, and you see a lot more biology major/computer science minors, biology/molecular biology concentration, etc. than you used to.

It got thrown out because every response was "I hate this degree and regret it every day. Also, yes I'd do it again because I secretly hate myself and like money."

My exact thought looking at this

Makes sense I suppose. No data to back it up, but people I know that majored in Biology went on to successful medical or nursing careers, or to advanced postgrad/PhD to your point. Of course that’s a small sample size.

My degree is in English Literature, and while I don't personally regret it due to my own life circumstances, I wouldn't rally anyone to go study the same.

Only reasons I don't regret are [1] I had TOPS and my dad paid what little TOPS hadn't covered [2] I have a good job regardless doing something completely unrelated to English. I certainly would never advise someone take out loans for an English degree.

Journalism has a lot of issues and a good chunk of it, IMHO, are caused by the mindset imposed that they should “make a difference” rather than “report the news.”

Probably similar to why so many people regret getting law degrees.

Bunch of people grew up on shows like "Law & Order" and whatnot, and think that being a lawyer is all courtrooms and high legal drama day-in and day-out.

Whereas I'm sure that lots of impressionable, young high schoolers see people like Tom Brokaw and Christiane Amanpour and journalists reporting from war zones and think to themselves "wow, I want to do that one day."

Except nobody told them that the odds of them doing journalism like that is next to nil.

So yeah...a bunch of people who wanted to "change the world" and "make a difference" and are now stuck doing the high school sports beat for the local paper.

Few people go into a trade or STEM field with that same head-in-the-clouds mindset.

Regret is the gap between expectations and reality.

I am one of 4 people I know that graduated with a Political Science degree from LSU. Not a single one of us uses our degree. The closest would be one of the four of us is an attorney.

So yea, I'd say I regret my degree choice.

Either you can handle busy season or you can't is how most accountants I know see the industry.

Big 4 hates their lives, but once you get into industry it tends to get a lot less strenuous, though still usually higher than 40 a week for six digits.

Just because you don't "use" your degree doesn't make it worthless. There are a lot of valuable skills one can develop obtaining a humanities degree.

Well, it used to be that way at least...

I started as a journalism major and realized about a month in what a massive mistake it was and switched.

Writing is a useful skill...that they don't teach well in journalism schools.

The best writing courses on campus are in the STEM departments. Try synthesizing highly intricate knowledge and writing in a bare-bones style in the way of a science journal. That is how you learn to write for an audience.

Edit: Most people who have made in journalism and reporting tend to say that their best teacher was their first newspaper editor who red-penned their first entries into a oblivion until they got it right.
