Watching bears and hunter videos - what happens if you shoot one?

Watching these videos online where bears climb up to tree stands. What happens if you end up shooting one in self defense? Do you report it or just bury the carcass and pretend it didn't happen?
How is LDWF going to react if you self report and claim self defense? Will they let you keep the pelt?

I’d say you’ve got a good chance of getting in some degree of trouble. Mr. Green Jeans is always looking for a promotion, plus the state has to fill those coffers some how.

Fellow near here shot one trying to climb in his box stand. It was a world of pain because he called wildlife and fisheries. Got arrested and all kinds of misery. I would not tell a soul and dispose of the evidence after hearing what he went through.

I have always been told by people with green jeans if you shoot a bear in Louisiana you’d wish you would have shot a person. But I’m not trying to find out if that is true or not.

Better make sure it’s a threat and not just you being scared for nothing

frick no. You'll be guilty until proven innocent. You better be bleeding profusely from teeth and claw marks. Black bears are more protected than people in this state.

Anything could happen, but I’ve been around Louisiana bears a good bit and have never been threatened.

apply the rule of 3 S’s:
shoot
shovel
shut up
shoot
shovel
shut up

In the state of Louisiana if you shoot a bear or cougar/mountain lion and claim it was self defense you'd better have significant claw marks on your body. At least a green jeans told me that.

Every one I have encountered was terrified when it saw humans.

Bears are extremely curious. If they realize it's a human the run like heck 99.9% of the time. Most wardens know this. Hopefully hunters learn this soon.

I elk hunted a few times with a friend in Idaho. Sometimes we were in grizzly country. Never saw one but saw fresh tracks and where they had clawed trees way up high.
He told me that if I shot one in self defense to cut the bullet out, throw it far off and top not even tell him what I did.
So much of that area was so thick that I don't think you would stand a chance if you happened upon a sow with cubs. Second time I went back I had a 10mm 1911 on me.

Yup. Black bear attacks are extremely rare. You're way more likely to die driving to the hunt.

We are starting to get problem bears in the woods where I hunt. My dad had a bear stomp at him last year. He calls it a bluff charge but it didn't really charged. Damn thing followed him for over an hour. He has the bluff on video. Dad's buddy ran away from a bear the next day because it wouldn't leave even with him shooting warning shots into the ground. He is lucky it didn't chase him.
It won't be long before something happens to a kid out on their own.

I get that, but I imagine they are exponentially higher among people who spent a lot of time around bears than people who don't.
That, along with them being souped up 200 pound raccoons, makes me a little bit upset that I can't legally smoke one for being a total dick.

Yeah same here, was just saying it's probably going to be considered if you smoke one.

BS. A guy from new iberia got caught. his fine was 3k. Also just googled another one, 2500 fine and 100hrs community service, loss of hunting for a year. This one hurts a bit.
Hell it's more expensive to go on a legal guided hunt for bears.
