In my part of the country it is a bowfin. It is said that not even gators will eat them.

Everyone is correct. Bowfin

“ The choupique (pronounced shoe-pick) he was referring to is the same creature that biologists call “bowfin” and North Louisianans call “grinnel.” Bass fishermen loathe them, too often slamming the hook home on what they think is a tournament-winning fish, only to find that the ferocious fight is being delivered by a lowly choupique”

Side note: first fish I ever caught as a kid when my Dad took me fishing for the first time - made me throw back b/c it’s wasn’t good to eat - I was some upset. But then I went on to become a fisheries biologist.

Not enough boat paddle strikes to the head for that grinnel to have been caught in NE LA.

The kind that makes you think for about 5 seconds that you have the bass of a lifetime on your hook.

Grinnel, mudfish, bowfin, cypress trout, chopique, mud-bass….. these SOB’s go by many a name.

They will hit all kinds of chit but 90% of the ones I ever caught came on a white or white/chartreuse spinnerbait.

Only thing that swims in the Southeastern lakes more worthless or vicious is a snakehead.

( edit… them flying asian carp may be MORE worthless on second thought)

I've watched some YT videos of people catching and cooking grinnel and it always looks good but have never tried it. Honestly, been awhile since I've even caught one.
