Tennessee’s defensive statistics are misleading

Tennessee has the fastest offense in the country and therefore each team averages WAY more plays per game and therefore the defense is going to give up more yards and points. Traditional statistics do a poor job of reflecting a defense’s actual effectiveness related to the amount of plays the defense has to account for. Points per drive is a much more accurate measure of a defense. Tennessee is ranked 24th in the country in this category. LSU is ranked 14th by comparison. I do not predict LSU is going to somehow discover an offense against Tennessee, but they will have more opportunities to score.

Tennessee has a worse defense than State and Auburn for sure. Probably FSU too

Doesn't that mean that LSU's offence is going to get more opportunities for plays?

I don't think Tennessee's defense is any better than Mississippi State's, and we figured out how to move the ball in that game in the second half. It just comes down to the quarterback making the right plays. If he goes into a shell, there's nothing anyone can do for him. But receivers do need to catch the ball when they are given a chance.

Tennessee has the 21st ranked rush defense. We will have to take advantage of their pass defense. Jayden needs to take more chances.

LSU has an inchoate offense led with no QB.

We got that from your first 100,000 posts today. For fricks sake you can stop how.

It bodes well for us that they play fast on offense and keep their defense on the field. We have owned the 4th quarter this year. If the Vol defense is worn down, we have a huge opportunity to gash them in the 4th quarter to pull away late.

Stats, at this point of the season, don't tell a whole lot about how good a team is, especially for a team like TN that has played two legitimate teams.

I will keep saying it until it changes. Too bad if you don't like it.

Their secondary is weak....throw the ball down the field, it will be there.

quote:this is true. Traditional "yards per game" is far too simplistic, actually for both offense and defense.
Traditional statistics do a poor job of reflecting a defense’s actual effectiveness related to the amount of plays the defense has to account for.
I'd say "yards per play" is the most relevant stat for both an offense and a defense.

Yes, even less than stellar defenses can make that adjustment.

If you’ve seen them play you know that isn’t true.

MSU's defense is a lot better than Tennessee

Pitts RB averaged 6 YPC against them…

The flip side to this is other teams haven’t needed to run because they’ve had a lot of success in the air. Not saying that explains the whole thing but sometimes the yards don’t tell the story.

Points or yards per drive would be better.
