I know it’s stupid to try and time the market, but what about reducing 401K contributions?

Is it also considered stupid to reduce your 401k contribution down to the maximum company match?

Catching your breath after throwing up on your shoes before you look in the mirror and pick your head up.

That’s what buying low feels like.

I mean you're still benefitting from the tax deferral and if you're worried about the market, you can keep it non invested/cash in your account.

Unless you have better plans for the money other than sitting in a savings account

I never put more than the company match because I'd rather contribute to a ROTH with anything extra. I have like 15 mutual funds to choose from in my 401k. I can invest money in my ROTH in pretty much anything I'd like.

I’ve been in cash in my 401k the last few months and will start putting back in the next couple weeks very slowly. Dow down 7k points from its high, seems like a good time to be bumping up contributions.

Why would you want to lessen contributions when shares are cheaper?

I manage my own 401k so for the last few months I have been continuing to put money in but I'm only stockpiling it for after I think we're through the worst.

Are you young? Or retiring soon? If young… I completely agree with Adam.

Now, if you’re worried about losing your job, and need the extra cash available as an emergency, then this could make sense. But if you’ve got a lot of investing life left, buy more now than ever. If it continues to go even lower, but even more. (Assuming you can afford to).

I once saw a quote, perhaps on here, which said “the only thing people hate buying when it’s on sale are stocks”.

The time to reduce was beginning of 2022. If your time horizon is 10+ years then I'd actually be INCREASING my contribution.

You're getting more stocks for the same price.

For some reason, stocks are the one thing people hate to buy when they're on sale.

If you’re not near retirement age, and years away from penalty free 401k withdrawals, why would you stop contributing and buying discounted shares/more units?

i don't want to lessen my contributions, but anyone change their managed funds to a more stable fund? I have a target date of 2045, long way from retirement. Im tired of loosing money since the egg head has been in office.

Counterpoint: increase contributions when market is down.

I think people are backwards most of the time. Buy low sell high.

If you have Roth's maxed and can afford to max your 401k why wouldn't you? You can put it in safer investments if you want to.
