What are some bands you found early before they blew up?

Probably biggest one for me was Lamb of God.

Saw them on the 2nd stage at Ozzfest right before AOTW released. Instant huge fan. Then over the next few years they just blew up. I ran in to them in the streets in Memphis before a show during that time.

Also Gojira. They were the first band to play at that Memphis show with LOG. I remember people saying you'll like them and I was like "they're french? What?"

I might think of more later, but that's the best two I can think of right now.

Heard “Telamon Bridge” from Spoon on the What’s Up Matador comp. Bought Telephono soon after. A Series of Sneaks changed everything.

I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit on KLSU one day driving down Dalrymple. I attempted to tell everyone about it. No one had heard it or seemed to care how excited I was about it. I then basically forgot about it for what seemed to be months before it hit regular radio.

I discovered Nickelback before they got big with Silver Side Up...I'm ashamed to admit.

30 Seconds to Mars: worked at KLSU and the first single came through. Got limited air time, then they had a show upstairs at HOB that I was trying to hock tickets for. Only downside is you couldn’t make mention of it being Jared Leto, and I’m guessing maybe only a few dozen people attended.

I grew to dislike them by the time they got to 104.9

Also, I didn’t find them early, but I think the guys in Thou said Code Orange Kids played one of their house show in Broadmore back in the day.

I was there, not many people at all. Dozens is probably accurate.

everyone in the alt country scene knew of jason isbell when he was with DBT but I remember meeting him at chelseas in 2007 when he had just left the band, putting out his first solo record and there wasn't a whole lot of people there. saw him in 2009 play an acoustic show at circle bar with probably 20 people in the room.

fast forward a few years after he got sobered up and he's winning grammy's and packing out arenas.

I didn't think about him, but I saw DBT a few times and never knew who was in the band. They were always just the openers.

REM

Saw them in a bar that seated about 200 before they released their first album.

I knew they were good then.

Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown. Spent some time in Raleigh and I had mutual friends with some of Whiseytown’s band members (Steve and Phil).

It's weird how sometimes you can just tell. It's not 100%, but sometimes you just see a band and know they're going to be big.

I have seen more than a few local bands, however, that I heard them, I thought there’s no way this band can’t blow up, and then they went nowhere.

I had Guns N' Roses Appetite For Destruction the day it was released. It took a whole year afterward before they blew up huge. I was an early Dream Theater fan, the same with Devin Townsend.

I saw REM in New Orleans in 1983 and a band nobody heard of called 10,000 Maniacs opened for them. Next year 10k Maniacs played Tipitina's and I remember how much I liked them the year before, saw I went to see them. Natalie was a real gypsy in those early days.

Cry Of Love, Derek Trucks, Brother Cane and Joe Bonamassa when he was a fat pudgy kid playing with Bloodline.

Charlie Crocket, we used to go see him play in Dallas with about 10 people in the bar. One time he had just hired some new band members and was calling out the chords for the next song all night. I think that guitar player is still with him.

Sturgill Simpson, bought Tix to see him at a little bar in Deep Ellum and in the meantime he blew up. He still honored the booking and it was really great.
Others were REM and U2. Was listening to them in '81-82 and saw REM at the Bayou.

U2 got AOR airplay in '80 ("I Will Follow") so no points

However you get back to even w/REM@tBayou, which is always impressive.
