Underhill has a free podcast (New Orleans Football Podcast) that I listen to on occasion when the topic is interesting. His co-host is dreadful so listening to him speak over Nick is annoying, but Underhill is one of the very few Saints reporters with solid connections.

He wouldn't elaborate too much on certain things (like the contract) but it's easy to read between the lines.

He said one day at practice, CJGJ had a small injury after coming back to practice. He said CJGJ started yelling at coaches that "this is what you wanted, right? to tank my value?"

He also alluded heavily that this move was done to remove a disgruntled player out of the locker room and the Saints were fine with giving him away if it met him being gone. He also said CJGJ being unhappy and it being the final year of his contract tanked his value and the Saints did this to save the locker room from distractions.

He said the drafting of Alonte Taylor, while at the time we couldn't figure out why they would take a CB in the 2nd, was done knowing full well he would be the replacement for CJGJ.

Anyway, give it a listen if you want. Good stuff from a credible reporter.

You knew there had to be a back story for the little we received back. If only some had waited for it I imagine more will come out later including CJGJ's side.

Generally, when something is too good/bad to be true, there are reasons why that may not be obvious to the naked eye.

CGJ for a 5th & 6th rd pick didn’t just happen because the Saints were careless.

No player is bigger than the team. While I like what Ceedy brought on the field, if it was causing issues then it was his time to go.

Great. They just set the precedent for how all future players are to act when they want a new contract, because they know the Saints will cave and give them the win.

It's mind boggling that for years teams have successfully held players to either play or hold out in order to not reward them for unprofessional behavior, and here the Saints have just caved and did the opposite of that. Now we have nothing while the Eagles and CGJ come out as winners.

The carelessness was prior to yesterday when the foundation for this was laid by (1) mismanaging our cap and (2) not trading him at/before the draft.

They fricked up bigly. We lost 2 young secondary players this year (one elite and one with elite potential) for effectively nothing and replaced them with aging vets on short-term deals.

I don’t disagree but I genuinely think they were trying to workout a contract long term here.

but they never got close and knew it would be a strange contract situation. Ceedy thinks he's a premier secondary player. Saints thinks he plays a position not valued to the standard he values his talent. They should have been more proactive long ago, mostly around draft time when we gave a treasure chest away for players now gave talent away for nearly free.

That's where the cap mismanagement comes in.

We likely weren't going to be able to keep MW and CGJ but we lost both for effectively nothing.

And we signed 2 older guys who are just perpetuating the cap issues.

I also think we as fans overvalue players based on thier personality/likeability.

I liked CGJ and think he would be worth more than we got in a slightly different situation. But I think his demands being known, being in the last year of his contract, his position as a nickle/slot corner being less valuable and his general demeanor regarding the team due to his contract devalued him on the general market.

Just my opinion and I will miss the swagger/attitude he brought to the defense on the field. At least we got something for him rather than hoping we could reach an agreement or that we got a compensatory pick (not guaranteed and history for the Saints makes it seem less likely, rather than more likely)

Who has reported that they have never been close, and when?

Like I said I don’t disagree and I don’t love the fact we lost both of those guys. But the Saints (over nearly 20yrs) have a long history of taking care of draft picks on their 2nd contract and being able to make it work.

CGJ did his little mini hold out thing and then came back, I figured they were on the right track with him at least playing the year out.

Maybe they lacked foresight on this one but I really think they had confidence they could get a deal done with him

Have they seen how CJGJ acts on the field, are they surprised he would act this way and yell at the coaches?

Sounds like CJ wanted $12 mil per, Saints we’re offering $8 mil, which was on par with other top slots

This no doubt curtailed his trade market, thus the compensation. No one wants to pay a slot corner $12 mil

Underhill, while dodging the questions and comments from his co-host, heavily hinted that the contract was a sticking point they couldn't overcome and then that led to CJGJ being disgruntled and staging a "sit in".

Others, like Hendrix and Rosvoglou, talked about the contract not being close. Slot corner vs Safety salaries. Take what you want from that with those two, but I do think they try to be solid Saints reporters
