Can anybody help point me in the direction of a good doctor or service for my little boy? Child psychology or something in that vein in the Baton Rouge area. He was just diagnosed with ADHD and ODD. I am at my wits end and want to help him and not make things worse. I admit I'm not the best parent, but I do love him and am hoping maybe some of you parents that have been in a similar situation might help out. My own father was not a good role model in this regard.
Thanks in advance.

ADHD isn't really a thing. Teachers can't handle kids these days. Hey teach, let the the boys that are very energetic play outside a little longer.

I’m curious about this as much as I am the kid.

There are cases where it’s pretty legit. Next thing you know, you’re going to be here telling us all that mental health isn’t real and all the buttercups should just suck it up.

He is a boy with alot of energy. Keep him constantly active. ADHD is a bullshite term and giving your kid drugs is definitely not the answer. Also ODD which is not real can be remedied by setting standards and discipline and if necessary the occasional belt. You need to take charge of your household implement and follow through with rules and standards for your child. If you do not want to be a disciplinarian than get over it. I would urge you to not send your child to these idiots who diagnosed my cousin with ADHD, gave him pills, and now he is 32 years old with no job, 400lbs, and sits in front of a computer all day everyday. That shite they give these children is dope and it is terrible for anyone.

I work with mentally ill children and teens but am not in the BR area. Kids with ADHD respond well to a calm, orderly routine with lots of structure. This also helps with ODD. In terms of managing behavior, you want to have clearly stated rules that are consistently enforced.

Are you willing to go to Prairieville? I know a good therapist who uses 'play therapy' with children and sees clients on Sunday afternoons if needed. We have been using her for 2 years for a child with the same diagnosis.

Not in that area - sorry. I can encourage you to ignore some of the responses that it's not a real thing on here (you'll get them everywhere...so just get used to it).

The earlier you get your son assistance, whether it's therapy or appropriately prescribed medication, the better. I have three with ADHD, one of which also has very high functioning autism (a majority of people with autism have ADHD as well).

As someone else stated, structure is your best friend. I have seen first-hand the before and after. If you want proof - get in a good routine and schedule, then see how the behavior changes when you go on a vacation or something that breaks up that routine. That's where patience and endurance are tested the most.

Have you used your wits to discipline your child? Consequences, natural and punitive? Grounding, removing privileges, spanking and time out
, or have you reached your wits end before trying consistent discipline based on a clear set of expectations that don’t change?

ODD simply means he doesn’t like being told no. That’s on you. Get involved in his life. Set hard limits and follow through a teach your kid the meaning of no, and how to deal with it when he hears no.

ETA: Discipline is not beating your child. It’s setting boundaries. It’s teaching him that he is making decisions and decisions have consequences both positive and negative. He wants your attention. Give it to him.

Don't listen to people that say AD/HD isn't real.

Unfortunately the doc will probably want to put your child on meds.

It's a tough choice. Let your child struggle or put him/her on meds that's will change their personality.

I have read where some parents modify their child's diet and that seemed to help.

Look for a support group in your area or online for advice.

Good luck.

We are about halfway through PCIT with our four year old to help with extreme mood swings and some pooping issues. Not sure if that is anywhere related to your situation but I would recommend any sort of therapy before putting my kid in meds.

Also, some of these comments are out of control. Not everyone is born a perfect parent and you’re doing the right thing by trying to improve your kids situation. Sometimes that means improving your parenting skills and that’s ok. Good luck.

We have routine. We set rules. We're not overly strict nor do we let him run over us. I know that I can't whip this out of him. It's beyond being just "hard-headed" and "energetic."
Personally I hate the rush to prescribe kids these drugs and the drive to take away parents' rights to discipline and teach our kids personal responsibility. We're trying to be open-minded.
Thank you all for your responses. Truly appreciate it.

There are legitimately some of the worst responses I've ever read to this person in this thread. Children that have ADHD and some other issues that are related, have brains that work in a different manner. The processing zone that helps "normal" people understand what the emotions of others are and regulate our own, create our standard human reward system and more is delayed and doesn't give that CHILD, who is already struggling to figure those things out the ability to deal well at all with their emotions etc. It is very real for some children and some of you pieces of shite are telling this parent that's trying to help his child that he's worthless and his kid is just a piece of shite too. frick Off. Is it over diagnosed absolutely, over medicated absolutely, but 1000% real for some people and it certainly effects thier lives MASSIVELY in those cases, and many of those kids are made to feel like they are awful people as kids and teenagers because they were never helped to develop the simple skills to cope with those things that others do naturally and either languish or hurt themselves and others because of it.

OP, best of luck helping your Son, These people have ZERO understanding of what your life can look like when your child truly struggles in this way. Look into "My Explosive Child" in the meantime it's a bit of a different route to parenting, but if your Son truly is ADHD/ODD combo it could help you gain some insight into how his brain works.

ETA: Don't just blindly buy into what a psychiatrist/psychologists says. Dig deep, learn about the conditions and how it makes their brain work, what they need etc. Be your son's biggest educated advocate. He needs you even more than you ever realized, just not exactly in the same way we thought they did when we started parenting. It's the hardest thing you'll ever do.
