Part of what makes it great is the grittiness of the filming. I saw it for the first time when I was about 10 in 1983. Having grown up in Shreveport, I was very familiar with a lot of the small towns in northeast Texas where this was supposed to have taken place. The movie did a great job of capturing what these small communities were like in the 70’s and even early 80’s. This coupled with the fact that it was not monsters or ghosts or aliens but regular people is what made it so scary to me.

If you want fake slasher films, then love the reboots. Not a fan of slasher films...but 70s slasher films are about as visceral as you can get.

You complain its not scary? Most slasher films aren't. They're mostly gore.

Its a cheap version of the horror genre...but you can't get more crazy creepy than the middle of buttfrick Texas in the 1970s when writers and directors had full authority. It almost feels like you're on the ground watching a doc. 70s films pushed the edge, the likes we haven't seen since.

It did for hitchhiking what Jaws did to swimming in the ocean.

it definitely doesn’t hold up well as one of the GOATs.

I still disagree.

One major issue with reviewing it after seeing its progeny is that everything else basically stole from it. Kind of like slashers and Halloween. So THAT is the issue more than the movie itself not holding up. It's style and substance are still being copied today, so it holds up.

Also, the shitty film gives it a snuff film feel and that's something that cannot be replicated today. Ti West does a good job making movies feel like they're from the 70s or 80s but they're still clean with modern film and post production. You can't replicate that grimy presentation like TCM or Last House on the Left.

It's not just the kills or direct interaction with the family. That scene where she stumbles into the room of feathers and bones is intense. It's very difficult to replicate that with clean/modern filmmaking.

I have to revisit 2 but I will say I pretty much loathe all other TCM movies except for the 2003 one, and that one is just uninspired slasher shite. The rest of the movies are horrible. Leatherface isn't a slasher.

I don't mean it isn't one of the GOATs. I mean that if you sat someone down today who has never seen it and made them watch it, they wouldn't be terrified of it like people were 30-40 years ago. It's "scariness" doesn't hold up is what I am trying to say.

Of course it's earned its spot historically, and the horror genre is what it is (even today) due to the OG TCM.

I just mean in terms of a good, scary movie, it doesn't hold up as well as some of the other GOATs in my opinion. So maybe a better way to put it is that it's one of the GOATs, but has aged sort of poorly.

And it's certainly not "trash" as the OP said. Not by any means.

I don't see how you couldn't have enjoyed the slow burn leading up to Leatherface's first apperance. It was masterfully done.

I watched the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for the first time a few months ago, and I was pretty impressed with it. (I had just watched Lifeforce and that made me want to see more by the director. All I'd seen before was Poltergeist.)

When the horror actually starts in TCM, it's understated in a way that makes it really effective. The killing is quick and matter-of-fact instead of "cinematic," and I think that makes a big difference.

I didn't enjoy the slowness of it. That retard in the van in the beginning cutting his hand, the pathetic reactions of the doofus' in the car. He lasted longer in the car than most normal people would've allowed. It got more interesting after the first kill I have to admit but the leading up to it. The wheelchair guy arguing about losing his knife with that blond. Drool. And the skeletons all over the house. Looks like they got a run on an after Halloween sale at Walmart. Not very realistic. I have to admit, after reading a lot of the comments I do have to say I get it (as far as it inspiring the whole slasher theme to horror movies). And I did read it wasn't done on a high budget. Who the hell knows, maybe if they had more money to film it could've been better.

there's never been another movie that makes you feel like the characters feel. idk how Tobe Hooper did it, but just watching the movie makes you feel hot, sweaty, tense, and claustrophobic. you feel disgusting, like you can almost smell the house through the screen. it's an amazing feat.

that shitty film and sound really contributes to the whole experience as well. One of the horror GOATs

I’m guessing you are under 25 or the type to just try too hard to go against the grain. How else can someone use the above criteria to discredit a movie this old.

It's not just that. Like I posted and Carson posted, the griminess of the style ADDS to the movie's effects.

This movie is about a gross, cannibal family in BFE Texas when it's inhumanly hot. If you over-produce the look of the movie it becomes more fake. The grittiness makes it feel more real.
