I was researching vocational high schools earlier today. My son is soon to enter 8th grade and the only vocational high school near us is Rayville Voc HS. Literally, there are only 10 Vocational HS in all of Louisiana with terrible funding in place wtf
Also, my wife is supportive of a move to New Hampshire so our son can learn a trade like welding in high school at a vocational high school. How did LA let vocational schools get this terrible?

Sounds like you will find a ton of options if your family is ok moving across the country just to attend a vocational HS.

My initial thought is that these high school programs were fazed out when the for profit community/professional colleges started to emerge.
You can’t give a kid a job out of a votech high school when he has to graduate from a certified (for profit) post high school program.
The people that run the programs make sure you have to have their certification before you can get a job.

Also, the kid has to pay a fee to the state for the certification

Well that seems a bit extreme on the surface.

NYC amazed me at their voc schools. Pretty much everything you could imagine.
My high school had an auto shop but I didn't take it.
It is crazy that in Louisiana we make all our schools college prep.

Leave Louisiana if you can and head north.

Lots of things don’t make sense. Nicholls got rid of their ag program a few years before I went. A placed with unlimited space on their farm surrounded by cane fields cut out agriculture.

You want to move across the country so your son can be a welder? Moving out of Louisiana is always a good idea but damn, find something better than welding.

I don’t know much about welding, but i would figure there aren’t many places in the country better to learn welding than in Louisiana. Everyone I know that burns rods and isn’t a junkie makes good money.
Why can’t he just graduate high school, get a 6 month welding certificate, and become a welder’s helper? It’s not like sending him to some great welding high school is going to get him into Princetons welding program.

You’re going to move across the country so you kid can learn welding in high school? There must be some other info you haven’t included.

LaSAS in Bunkie is a good school as well. Has a vocational path and a college prep path. I know they do a lot of small engines and welding, are big into FFA. Have to apply though, and not always a chance to get in.

I think there are dual enrollment programs now where he can take classes at the local votech college while in HS. But honestly I would see if a local handy man needs a helper. That will get him exposure to carpenter, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Then next year he can work at a small engine shop. When he’s older, he can work at a fabrication shop. That should cover most of the trades. Then he can make an informed decision of what he would like to do and work toward more formal training.

You get more funding for funneling kids to college so they are more educated. The school districts are chasing the federal and state dollars.

Tons of high schools in Louisiana offer welding classes through their local votech. Tons of schools in LA also offer Ag. This wasn’t researched very well was it?
