Being this worked up at 5am over a simple question can't be great for your health

and also got into deep water work.

That's where the money is at, not fab work.

Fab work doesn't require a lot of training. Maybe a year of so, then work as a helper (Which is low pay) before moving up.

If you can do underwater, you'll do well. Not sure I could do it. I can dive, I can weld, but not the combo.

Late to the game, but all school districts participate in the state JumpStart program. It integrates technical education into the high schools. Students have the ability to earn industry-based credentials their sophomore though senior year of high school. It is the alternative diploma track from TOPS University track.

There is also dual enrollment opportunities with local community/technical colleges to earn credit as well.

Also, my wife is supportive of a move to New Hampshire so our son can learn a trade like welding in high school at a vocational high school.

People actually move to New Hampshire?

He’s young. Have him talk to some local welding shops, see if he can offer to do some minor work in exchange for being taught how to weld. Check with some community colleges, see if he can take basic welding classes in the evening or weekends. He might decide in 3-4 years that welding sucks, or he might love it. Have him look at going into the military as an option when he graduates, he can be trained in all phases of welding and be paid for it.

Biggest thing is if he genuinely wants to be a welder, impress on him that he stay off of drugs and be reliable.

Great. He can still do that while getting free education and training that will actually benefit him later in life. High school is the only time you can get that training for free. He can do both just like I and many other people did and still do.

I send my son to an all-boys Catholic school that most certainly isn’t free. There’s no vo-tec part of education for us. I graduated LSU in physics, my wife in French lit. Hopefully my son finds something he’d like study and pursues that regardless of potential work. Work will come if you’re a smart, well rounded person.

This thread is absurd. This dude wants to pick up and move 3,000 miles away because his 13 or 14 year old son said he wanted to weld. Next week the little fricker might want to be a doctor

I've kind of followed your stuff here, and your kid will do fine, you've obviously put a lot of time and energy into your child. He's fortunate to have a dad that believes in him.

with a bit of charisma, half way decent intelligence, and some drive, you can do great in this world. People sell themselves way too short.

Sounds like you're training him to be queer. College is for gays and libs and trannys, get him a 250 and put a rig on the back and ship him to Wyoming on his 18th birthday. That's how you build character

Hopefully your son get a fricking job so that taxpayers don’t have to pay off his gender studies degree debt.

Guy lives in fricking New Orleans.

I don't understand how the idea of possibly picking up and moving to New Hampshire is what everyone is glumming on as being the most fantastical aspect of this situation.

Seems reasonable to consider he might be looking for any excuse he can find to get the hell out of dodge, as are most people.

I have a friend who, when he graduated, had most every certification you could get at the time in computer programming. He also won the state competion twice and placed nationally which gave him scholarship money. He went to college because most of it was paid for, but he tested out of many of his computer classes. All he needed to really take was more advanced stuff and academic classes.

I dont think you can really compare programmers to welders in terms of career trajectory

I worked offshore after college and used to go through basic offshore training with some of the sat divers and no way in hell could I ever imagine doing that. The storied they would tell are pretty insane. And additionally, you have to live in a little diving bell for a month straight.

If you ever want to read about an incredibly fricked up diving accident, google the Byford Dolphin.

You don’t need a Vo-tech school. Just about every high school in Louisiana has welding courses that can teach a student the basics. Some even give certifications. Stay in high school take the welding classes, electrical classes, carpentry classes for free. He may end up liking one of those better or he may end up wanting to go to college. Then he can go juco or trade school. Why limit the kid now?

Yep, there's no way I could do it. I get uptight in enclosed areas underwater.

I will try (and have tried) many different things, but I'm not under any delusion I could do that successfully.

I can do most standard welding (tig, mig, heliarc, arc) but I need space, time, and less than rigid standards.
